Discriminations Discriminations

who? Discriminations is the joint production of John and Jessie Rosenberg. John is one of the world's older grad students, now completing a 30-year overdue dissertation at Stanford on discrimination. Jessie is a 16 year old junior at Bryn Mawr College majoring in physics.
\r\nwhat? John's focus, not surprisingly, will be on the theory and practice of discrimination, and how it is reported and analyzed.
\r\nJessie's will be discriminating thoughts on ... whatever catches her fancy or attracts her attention. (Email: jrosenbe@brynmawr.edu)

Washington Post Editorial On TJ Admissions: Both Unpersuasive And Incoherent

Posted on November 12, 2010
A few days ago I discussed The Quest For ?Diversity? At The Most Selective Public High School In America. Now comes the Washington Post with a pablum-like editorial on the same subject, ?Narrowing N.Va. high school?s diversity gap.? (?Pablum,? says the dictionary built into the Mac OS, is ?bland or insipid intellectual fare, entertainment, etc...

Blacks ?Overrepresented? At Columbia ... And Other Interesting Admissions Data

Posted on November 12, 2010
The Journal of Blacks in Higher Education reports that blacks make up 14.5% of this year?s freshman class at Columbia. Since according to the U.S. Census blacks make up only 12.9% of the U.S. population (as of 2009), they are clearly ?overrepresented? (in the language of the preferentialists) there...

Prize-Winning Queer Theorist Judith Butler Moves To Columbia

Posted on November 11, 2010
?Judith Butler, the oft-cited post-structuralist, feminist, and queer theorist,? the Columbia Spectator reports with unrestrained joy this morning, ?is coming to Columbia.? (HatTip to reader Ed Chin). ?We have every expectation that she will join this faculty full-time, but now she is just visiting,? [chair of the English and Comparative Literature department Jean] Howard said...

The Quest For ?Diversity? At The Most Selective Public High School In America

Posted on November 08, 2010
Selective colleges are not the only sites of conflict between the search for academic excellence and the determination to promote ?diversity.? Very selective secondary schools have also been engaged in this conflict, of which there is no better example than Northern Virginia?s exemplary Thomas Jefferson High School of Science and Technology, ?[t]he most selective public high school in America? and the subject of my posts several years ago on ?Diversity? In A Highly Selective High School (citing a number of sources) and ?Diversity? Mania Attacks A Very Selective High School...

Joe Biden On The Largest Shovel-Ready Scandal Project In American History

Posted on November 07, 2010
For more on the wit and wisdom of Joe Biden (you do want more, don?t you?), see my discussion on Pajamas Media this morning of the revealing example he gives to support his dramatic assertion that ?[e]very single great idea that has marked the 21st century, the 20th century and the 19th century has required government vision and government incentive...

Barack Obama As Benjamin Franklin: Eating Humble Pie?

Posted on November 05, 2010
One definition of ?eat humble pie? is to ?[a]ct submissively and apologetically, especially in admitting error.? In recognizing the ?shellacking? did Obama eat humble pie in his press conference yesterday? If he did, was his act and act or the real thing? Many in the mainstream media were persuaded they had witnessed a newly humble Obama...

Obama: Pro-Business?

Posted on October 30, 2010
A liberal friend just sent me an article arguing that it?s a ?myth? that Obama is anti-business. I thought others might be interested in my reply. Thanks for calling my attention to ?The Biggest Myth of the Midterms,? which I found one of the most encouraging and hope-inducing pieces I?ve read lately...

The Mystery Of Obama?s Visit To Charlottesville

Posted on October 30, 2010
Alas, Helene and I were out of town and thus missed Obama?s visit to Charlottesville yesterday. This report in Politico gives the pros and cons ? revving up the base; no fence-sitters left to be offended; etc. ? but I still find the prez?s visit a mystery...

Embarrassing, Unwitting Admissions By Affirmative Action Addicts

Posted on October 30, 2010
As I recently mentioned here, linking to my actual discussion here, the Arizona Civil Rights Amendment, which will prohibit the state from granting preferences based on race, ethnicity, or sex, will be on Tuesday?s ballot. Defenders of preferential treatment in the state, such as Arizona?s Own ?Obama Girl,? State Representative Kyrsten Sinema, whom we encountered there, have been both agitated and voluble, which has caused some of their statements in defense of the racial status quo to be more revealing than they intended...

?Diversity? Here, There, Everywhere...

Posted on October 29, 2010
A week or so ago Helene and I were visiting friends in South Carolina, and while there I ran across this story that discussed here and linked here. Now we?re in White Plains, New York, visiting daughter Jessie on her 24th birthday (!). Sitting in a coffee shop this morning and browsing through a copy of Westchester magazine that someone had left on our table, I learned that the cover article in the October issue ranked the best places to live in Westchester County...

A Ground Zero Double Standard?

Posted on October 28, 2010
I wonder, here, how many liberals who either insinuated or asserted that it was hateful, intolerant, and downright un-American to oppose the Ground Zero Mosque are ready to stand in solidarity with Annie Chambers Caddell of the Brownsville neighborhood ...

Words Matter

Posted on October 27, 2010
Candidate Obama: ... words are important, words matter, and the implication that they don?t, I think, diminishes how important it is to speak to the American people directly about making America as good as its promise.... President Obama, 25 October 2010 If Latinos sit out the election instead of saying, ?We?re going to punish our enemies and we?re gonna reward our friends who stand with us on issues that are important to us,? if they don?t see that kind of upsurge in voting in this election, then I think it?s going to be harder and that?s why I think it?s so important that people focus on voting on November 2...

Researchers Identify A ?Liberal Gene?

Posted on October 27, 2010
Don?t blame liberals. They were born that way. Liberals may owe their political outlook partly to their genetic make-up, according to new research from the University of California, San Diego, and Harvard University. Ideology is affected not just by social factors, but also by a dopamine receptor gene called DRD4...

?There They Go Again: Women Against Equal Treatment?

Posted on October 26, 2010
That?s the title of a piece I wrote on the Arizona Civil Rights Amendment that went up on Minding The Campus today. Since the title alone is a bit thin, I invite you to read the whole thing.

TPDS

Posted on October 25, 2010
TPDS? Yes. Tea Party Derangement Syndrome. Today the Chronicle of Higher Education published a short, trenchant analysis of it by Peter Wood, president of the National Association of Scholars, and a perfect if unintentional example of it by Brooklyn College political scientist Corey Robin...

?Sustainability? As The New ?Diversity?

Posted on October 25, 2010
?There is nothing white students can do to make themselves ?diverse,?" I wrote in this recent post on Minding The Campus, ?but according to the ideology of sustainability they can be a vital part of a new world-saving movement by simply turning off the light when they leave their rooms...

The Washington Post: ?Deep Divisions? In DOJ Over Civil Rights

Posted on October 23, 2010
This afternoon the Washington Post posted a long (five screen) article on the conflict within the Justice Department over the enforcement of civil rights laws provoked by the Philadelphia New Black Panther party case. Interviews and government documents reviewed by The Washington Post show that the case tapped into deep divisions within the Justice Department that persist today over whether the agency should focus on protecting historically oppressed minorities or enforce laws without regard to race...

The Inscrutable Americans

Posted on October 22, 2010
I have a short piece, The Inscrutable Americans, on the National Association of Scholars website that discusses the interest, in both China and the United States, of broadening the focus of Chinese scholars of America beyond Sino-American diplomatic history and policy studies...

Obama Explains Why Democrats Aren?t Thinking Clearly

Posted on October 20, 2010
President Obama: Part of the reason that our politics seems so tough right now and facts and science and argument does not seem to be winning the day all the time is because we're hardwired not to always think clearly when we're scared.... That must explain why the Dems just don?t get it: ?Dems running scared...

Obama?s Turn To ?Racial-Solidarity?: A Blow By Blow Endorsement

Posted on October 16, 2010
On a number of occasions already we?ve encountered Charles M. Blow, one of the two regular New York Times black columnists covering (largely, though not exclusively) black issues, and it?s never been a pretty site. Today, however, he stoops to what may be a new low, endorsing Obama?s new rather shrill appeals to racial solidarity, though he does lamely attempt to cover this embarrassment with the charge that in doing so Obama is simply emulating Republicans...

More Shear Nonsense In The New York Times

Posted on October 16, 2010
In a New York Times ?Political Memo? published yesterday, Obama, ?Hitting the Trail, Still Looks for Ways to Make His Message Stick,? reporter Michael D. Shear reports argues that Obama?s problem is the framing rather than the content of his message. (I?ve criticized the liberals urge to frame a number of times, such as here, here, here, here, and here...

Is The University Of Virginia Suffering From An Epidemic Of Violence, Hate, Bias, Rape, Classism, Ableism...?

Posted on October 15, 2010
H.L. Mencken once defined Puritanism (incorrectly, if it matters) as the constant fear that somewhere someone may be having a good time. For an argument that this description fits far too many of today?s ever-vigilant politically correct students, see my Political Correctness Is the New Puritanism on Minding The Campus today.

Prop. 107 On The Ballot In Arizona

Posted on October 10, 2010
Here we go again. The Arizona Civil Rights Initiative, Proposition 107, is on the November ballot. Modeled on the language of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and virtually identical to similar measures passed by substantial margins in California, Washington, Michigan, and Nebraska, Prop...

Evading The Question Of Anti-Asian Discrimination

Posted on October 09, 2010
Today Inside Higher Ed posts an interview with Robert Teranishi, associate professor of higher education at NYU, author of a new book, Asians in the Ivory Tower: Dilemmas of Racial Inequality in American Higher Education. The Q&A on affirmative action (or at least the A) is evasive and even mealy-mouthed...

The Dems Make Gains ... At The Washington Post

Posted on October 06, 2010
I have a post on Andrew Breitbart?s Big Journalism.com this morning, Democrats Make Gains? At the Washington Post. It points out, with pictures (violating my belief that a thousand words are nearly always worth more than a picture), how the Post?s editors changed the headline on Tuesday?s lead article between its appearance in print and online...

The Archetype Of A Liberal?Conservative Debate

Posted on October 05, 2010
An old liberal friend visited my wife and me over the past weekend. Because he believes, for example, that Nancy Pelosi and Barbara Boxer are rather moderate centrists and other fictions we generally avoided talking politics, but we did risk one conversation on Obamacare that quickly became a rather brisk and unpleasant debate...

?Diversity,? Chinese Style

Posted on October 02, 2010
?Chinese companies ?rent? white foreigners? CNN reported in June. (HatTip to reader Fred Ray) For a day, a weekend, a week, up to even a month or two, Chinese companies are willing to pay high prices for fair-faced foreigners to join them as fake employees or business partners...

Al Sharpton Also A Tax Cheat?

Posted on October 01, 2010
I have long wondered how anyone could take seriously a political party that not only takes Al Sharpton seriously but treats him as a respected leader. Now it turns out that he?s apparently a tax cheat as well as a bombastic buffoon and what an astute commenter on TaxProf aptly called ?a court-certified malicious liar (remember Tawanna Brawley and the subsequent libel suit Sharpton lost?)...

Affirmative Action Oscars?

Posted on September 30, 2010
From Reuters, on MSNBC: Black actors face snub at Oscars LOS ANGELES ? Will white be the only color on the red carpet at the 83rd Academy Awards? Although Oscar contenders are just lining up at the starting gate for the annual run for the gold, there?s a real possibility that for the first time since the 73rd Oscars 10 years ago, there will be no black nominees in any of the acting categories at the February ceremony...

Yes On Prop. 107!

Posted on September 30, 2010
The Arizona Civil Rights Amendment, also known as Proposition 107 or HCR 2019, will be on the November, 2, 2010, ballot. Virtually identical to similar measures launched by Ward Connerly and passed by substantial margins in California, Washington, Michigan, and Nebraska, Prop...
