The Mystery Of Obama?s Visit To Charlottesville

ADVERTISEMENTS

Alas, Helene and I were out of town and thus missed Obama?s visit to Charlottesville yesterday. This report in Politico gives the pros and cons ? revving up the base; no fence-sitters left to be offended; etc. ? but I still find the prez?s visit a mystery. The most recent survey I?ve seen (quoted in the Politico piece) found that

[f]ifty-four percent of voters in the district disapprove of his performance as president ... versus 44 percent who approve. The deficit is even wider among white voters: Sixty-six percent disapprove of the president, compared with 32 percent who approve.

Democrats are looking at a different set of numbers. The same poll ... showed that Obama retains pockets of support in the district, with 93 percent approval from African-American voters and a 51 percent approval rating in relatively liberal Charlottesville.

Perhaps the most damning of these figures is that only 51% of the voters in solid blue Charlottesville approve of the president?s performance.

Thus the mystery: why did Obama choose to punish a loyal Pelosi-puppet supporter like Perriello by reminding voters of his close association with him, while rewarding equally embattled Democratic incumbents Glenn Nye, VA-2, and Rick Boucher, a 14 term incumbent in VA-9, both of whom opposed Obamacare and other administration measures, by staying away from their districts?
