I own Blackacre
Posted on November 19, 2009Currently, I am reading about topics covered in first year real property. Fee simple subject to shifting executory limitations, that kind of thing. Its like studying for the bar exam again, except now it really matters that I get it right and there are no multiple choices...
What You're Missing
Posted on November 17, 2009This pretty much captures my Twitter feed:Yeah, so I just tweeted a legitimate #law related tweet followed by a #Glee tweet. Next I'm gonna tweet about my kid. That's how I roll.A sample of November tweets:Its like my internal cd player is on repeat.(I am not cool enough to have an internal iPod...

And God bless the men and women serving overseas that they may come home safe to their families....
Posted on November 11, 2009Clownfish says this as part of his prayers every night. This morning I was flipping past CNN news on the way to whatever mommy-approved kid programming dreck I could find on cable when Clownfish said:CF: "Are those guys serving overseas?"CNN was showing some soldiers in Afghanistan, laying down some machine gun fire...

I don't want to live on the moon
Posted on November 07, 2009I was sworn at yesterday. No wait, I was sworn in. It was nice -- a little pomp and circumstance-y, but who doesn't like a little pomp and circumstance now and again?I like my job. Every morning when I park at the garage and walk through the streets of the city to my office, I feel good...

The revenge of I love you
Posted on October 27, 2009Magic Cookie's latest adorable post reminded me to post this. We still have the "I love you more than..." debates - planets, numbers, food. But sometimes, he loves me a little less than Jupiter.Case in point:Clownfish did not want to go to bed last night...

Balance
Posted on October 17, 2009Not the usual kind of 'balance' we mommy lawyers write about. Karmic balance. Take for example, my friend. She found out she passed the bar exam and character & fitness, so she decided to hit a casino and walked away several hundred dollars richer...

In my defense, I've never worked in a cubicle environment before. Also, I apparently never acquired common sense or basic social awareness skills
Posted on October 06, 2009I had my first cubicle phone call today, and it was unexpected, and I had to argue with someone about something... respectfully of course. Followed with obligatory discussion about the other party's upcoming vacation.I talked in my normal... oh, perhaps even a touch too loud...

Hi fellow bloggers, readers, and anyone else passing through...
Posted on October 01, 2009My bloglines has a category I called Substantive Law filled with the "serious" law blogger & law prof posts. It is always the only one unread.I'd much rather read my webcomics, and the blogs from the 1Ls, who aren't freaking out yet, at least not sufficiently...

The problem with praise
Posted on September 24, 2009Boss: I tried to find something wrong with this memo. I couldn't. Excellent job. So now I am thinking, great, there is no way I can avoid disappointing her with my next memo. And she probably didn't mean it. And remember that citation error she found in the last memo? I am making a horrible impression and I am going to be the one they talk about for years to come about how horrible she was and I fail at life...

Vote for Pedro
Posted on September 09, 2009As [Useless Dicta] pointed out, its that time of year again. Submit your nominations to the ABA Blawg 100. * I'd love to see Namby on the list again -- the guy who won in that category last year got a book deal... I think Namby can beat him this time around, don't you? I have also nominated a few others in the law student, quirky, and niche categories...
I need a new theme song
Posted on September 09, 2009My old ones, like U2's Stuck in a Moment and Billy Joel's Vienna and Barenaked Ladies What a Good Boy don't work anymore. I'm no longer saying later will be better, stuck in a moment, depressed and doing my best to work through it. I'm no longer an overeager overambitious juvenile, so smart and still so afraid, who needs the reminder to slow down and appreciate what I have right now...

Posted on August 31, 2009Job is so far so good. Exactly what I expected, the people are nice, and I think I'll enjoy the work. Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence
Posted on August 27, 2009Clownfish, like all children, tends to have difficulty answering the question "How was your day?" I usually prompt him -- Tell me about the kids in your class... What was your favorite thing today.... When open-ended doesn't work, I go fishing. Did you color anything? Did you work with numbers? Did you go to the library? At this, he stopped:CF: How did you know we have a library?Me: I'm Mommy...

Best and Worst memories of 1L
Posted on August 20, 2009New Kid on the Hallway (and then Useless Dicta and others) had the idea that instead of giving 1Ls advice, we should write our best and worst memories form 1L.Best:Law school is a geek/nerd dream come true. Done!
Posted on July 31, 2009I did it. I survived three days, two bar exams, two hail storms, one GPS that really doesn't handle downtown areas very well, and one creepy guy who yelled at me for taking his hotel room. My laptop did not fail during exam one, my fingers are still numb from the death grip I had on my pen today as I hand-wrote twelve essays (damn state 2 and no laptop policy!), my head hurts probably because of the rum & coke that I drank a few hours ago, and I have a pretty hilarious story about shady motels...

Things I learned yesterday
Posted on July 17, 2009If you're a store clerk and take the customer's cash into your hand and put it in your pocket, that's embezzlement. If you put it in the drawer and then take it out and put it in your pocket, that's larceny. Also, if lady has a poodle on a leash and you kick the poodle, you've committed battery on the lady in addition to trespass to chattles...

Eulogy for a blog
Posted on July 12, 2009It is one thing when a blogger makes the decision to close up shop because the blog no longer serves a purpose to the writer. Ma'am
Posted on June 19, 2009I internally cringe whenever I am called Ma'am.It makes me feel old. I don't like the feel of the word -- it is a little cold and unfamiliar and formal, and I tend to be a warm, open, informal kind of gal in my personal interactions. It strikes me as discordant when after a pleasant exchange with someone, I get a Thank You Ma'am or You're Welcome Ma'am or Take Care Ma'am...
Bar essays

MILP #100
Posted on May 31, 2009Pt-Lawmom has the 100th round-up and she has come up with a fitting tribute indeed.Part of the reason we started the round up, I think, was to collect a bit of shared wisdom about surviving law school pregnant or with kid(s) in tow. I think we accomplished that, and my archives are often searched by women looking for answers to the heart-felt and occasionally bizarre questions...

Post-exam lack of feeling
Posted on December 15, 2008Real estate is over. I felt very nervous before the test. I haven't felt that nervous before a test in a while. Now, post-exam, I don't feel much of anything.I don't feel terrific, like wow I totally nailed that. I don't feel awful or sick, like wow I totally blew that...

Is there such thing as a knack fairy?
Posted on December 11, 2008I am ridiculously incapable of understanding Real Estate. I am just . . . not getting it. Or major aspects of it. It's like another language to me. I read it all semester. I always thought I understood what was going on. And I'd get to class and think I had studied Spanish while the professor was speaking Greek...
I think a little Queen (We are the Champions) is appropriate right now
Posted on December 10, 2008I wrote a summary judgment motion during my last week of work this past summer. I felt good about this one -- it was really helping someone who was getting railroaded by a much bigger entity. We didn't hold out much hope for SJ, but were certainly entitled to it, at least by my reasoning...

How can you tell if a lawyer is ethical?
Posted on December 08, 2008See, this would be the start of a great lawyer joke, except apparently, according to a multiple choice test, I am ethical enough to practice in every jurisdiction that takes the MPRE seriously.I have no idea how that happened.Ok, you can all officially say "I told you so...

NaBloPoMo Ends
Posted on November 30, 2008A post a day for 30 days. Done. It's a pyrrhic victory. Yes, I did it, but the price was a lot of truly awful blogging. And this is someone who has a pretty low opinion of her own blog to begin with. Maybe there were some decent posts in this mess, but they quickly got bumped by dreck...
Follow up
Posted on November 29, 2008In a desperate attempt to post anything for NaBloPoMo without resorting to song lyrics, recipes, or stories about shopping for socks, I thought I'd follow up on some of the posts from the month. We chickened out of Black Friday because my sister, Hubby, brother (and his fiancee), Dad and I stayed up past 2:00 AM talking...

Black Friday
Posted on November 28, 2008(Scheduled post because I am visiting my sister & family for the holiday).I never go shopping on Black Friday. So Bullshark and I have decided to splurge (a little) for Christmas and buy ourselves a new television...
A brief tale of green beans
Posted on November 27, 2008A little turkey, a little wine, a little green bean action. It was a nice Thanksgiving, my first in our new house. Around Christmas I suspected. After New Year's, I knew. Raptors run 10 m/s and do not know fear
Posted on November 21, 2008It's been two months since I interviewed a four year old. His favorite snacky is now Oreos... not Cheerios. Also, among the dinosaurs, he would now prefer to have a Velociraptor live in the house. When I pointed out the raptors are vicious soulless meat eaters who can open doors, he didn't mind because it would not eat him, though it might eat me...

Posted on November 19, 2008Yes, I read some webcomics. I read xkcd even though, at least occasionally, the sciencey mathy ones are over my head. This leads to a Wikipedia search and education. Posted on November 13, 2008Dear everyone,.:cough:.I know that I am extremely annoying to have in class these days . . . ok, more so than usual. Posted on August 30, 2008This morning, Clownfish came in with Ian the Tiger for his morning snuggle with me and Bullshark (the best part of any Saturday). Like most Clownfish stories, he was talking about something else when he suddenly declaredCF: I think we're all in a book...
This is supposed to be a law school blog, right?
Posted on August 28, 2008So I am finally taking a class with the professor that has been named 'professor of the year' so many times, he may as well have it tattooed on his forehead. He's funny (though not as funny as Prof. Admin). Still, I can see why he's as popular as he is: he is really good at his job, and I appreciate that...

Bound to get some angry commentary here but
Posted on August 25, 2008isn't it a bit disingenuous for Pelosi, or Obama for that matter, to say John McCain was "wrong" on Iraq and Obama was "right?" Notes from work club
Posted on June 05, 2008I am amazed at the pace I am working this summer. I keep getting mini-research assignments -- the kind that can be answered with short 3-5 page memos and completed in about four hours. In between, I am working on a motion I have to have done by close-of-business today...

I have never been as tired as I am right now... I have never been less inclined to study than I am right now... and I have an exam tomorrow
Posted on May 08, 2008I find my ability to really focus and learn and commit stuff to memory for my closed book exam the next day really improves from 10 PM - 2 AM the night before. At least that's the way it worked for Trusts and Estates. Though because Clownfish woke me up early, I am pretty sure I cited cases on my exam this afternoon thusly: "hey, remember the one with the guy and the kerosene fish? this is like that one, but he's less crazy...

Nothing shakes one's confidence like being completely and utterly wrong
Posted on May 03, 2008I like my Admin prof. He gives classic issue-spotter exams and makes old exams available and even provides a short sketch of model answers -- they're not exhaustive, but they give you an idea of what he was expecting to see in the answers. It's a really helpful study tool for me...
Never leave me alone with your Oreo cookies either
Posted on April 30, 2008I have no willpower.Regular readers know I tend to leave exams feeling pretty badly, even without rational justification. Hiatus
Posted on April 27, 2008I don't like it when bloggers disappear without explanation. It makes me think something terrible happened, like that they were hit by a car, instead of the more likely and more mundane reason, that they got too busy or too bored to blog. I also don't enjoy blogs wherein most of the posts are a breathless "too busy to write more, but I promise to be better...

Clearly, I was a miserable failure in this regard and that's why I am going to be a lawyer. But that's not the point of this post...

Dan Brown? Really?
Posted on April 09, 2008I read a Yahoo story (below) this morning because the headline intrigued me.Thoughts, in no particular order:I would be curious as to the actual poll wording. The Bible comes out as the "most popular" book. Was the question, What is the greatest/most important book of all time? Or what was the best book you ever read? I can see the Bible being the first response to the former, but maybe its just my brain, I probably would not have thought of it as a possible answer to the latter...
Journal survey
Posted on April 07, 2008The saying goes, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." Resurrection
Posted on March 22, 2008On Friday morning we had a mini-life-and-death-crisis. As Clownfish and I descended the front steps, we saw two birdies on the ground on the driveway. One was on its back, its legs up, not moving. The other was right side up but unable to move other than feeble twitches...

Home stretch

Into it
Posted on February 22, 2008Regarding a comment I received on a recent post:"Woah - you're seriously into it! I guess I'm just not that into law school . . . I mean, I show up . . . but that's as much commitment as I'm willing to give to the experience at this point!Well, the commenter (LSHM) has her own stuff going on -- young baby, husband in Iraq -- that makes that attitude totally understandable...
Literal humor
Posted on February 22, 2008Clownfish is getting to the point that he can make original jokes on his own, not just the garden variety funny things that kids say accidentally. And he is so proud of himself too.Recent example:BS: We have to wrap you up warm today -- don't want you to freeze and turn into a little ice cube...
The post in which I say unoriginal things about the nature of writing a law review article
Posted on February 20, 2008Reading over the last few weeks of posts, a new reader might think I dropped out of law school or something. It is not like my identity as ?law student? is less all consuming. Quite the contrary ? I eat sleep and breathe law school, except when I don?t...
Watching AI with Bullshark
Posted on February 19, 2008Re: That weird Colton kidMe: Who does he look like? He looks like a guy I know...BS: Ellen DeGeneres?Me: No! Maybe a young Anthony Michael Hall?BS: More like a young blonde Willem Dafoe.Me: He's almost creepy enough.Edited to add: Damn, someone made the Ellen joke on the show...
Basilisk
Posted on February 19, 2008Thank you, xkcd, for enabling me to use my "Harry Potter" tag again. That was awesome. Almost as awesome as a "Republicans for Voldemort" bumper sticker. Or a vanity plate that says HORCRUX.
Pre-schooler Skills
Posted on February 17, 2008Things a Clownfish can do at 3 and a half:Cuts with safety scissors, uses glue, and prefers blue paper to all other colors.Identifies all his letters, both upper case and lower case.Gets mad at me when I refer to lower case letters as "little" because his teacher said they were "lower case...
Law Prom
Posted on February 16, 2008NOTE: I realize this is a totally shallow superficial "traditional" law student kind of post... and I am ok with that. Every now and then, I think its ok to be a little superficial and just have a good time.Last year, I listed the pros and cons of not going to Law Prom...
MILS #33: In her own words
Posted on February 16, 2008Welcome to the Weekly MILS (Moms In Law School) Roundup. It is hosted on a rotating basis between PT-LawMom and A Little Fish in Law School blogs. We aim for Sunday posts, though I am posting a bit early this week. Next week, it'll be back at PT-LawMom's place...
Wash, rinse, now what?
Posted on February 15, 2008Socks before shoes.Bra before top.I think I need a checklist. In the shower this morning, I had to stand and think to try to remember if I had already washed my hair.
Things that don't happen
Posted on February 12, 2008A friend told me yesterdayAs a lawyer, you'll spend a lot of time preparing for things that neverhappen.Had my first experience with that. Six hours of my life I'll never get back.Maybe I should keep a running total?
Ever have one of those days
Posted on February 10, 2008where you look at yourself and sayThis is not my life.I am having one right now. Most unpleasant.
MILS #32

My post meme
Posted on February 08, 2008Law Student Hot Mama (author of "Law School Sucks and So Do Lawyers" and one of the recent additions to the MILS round up) tagged me for a meme.I noticed A New Duck and LSHM herself had difficulty with this because of a dearth of material as new bloggers; at well over 300 posts, I have the opposite problem...
Conversations with boys
Posted on February 04, 2008My dad: So how much longer til you're a lawyer?Me: A year and a half of classes, then I have to pass the bar.My dad: Ah, well, I've passed a lot of bars in my day (*beat*) Come to think of it, no, I hardly ever pass bars. I tend to go in and check them out...
Damn
Posted on February 03, 2008Pats got spanked.Clownfish was saying all day the Giants were gonna win, but then quickly followed up with "Go Patriots" whenever his father gave him "the look."Guess he had the last laugh. Too bad he's sleeping.SH -- hope you're happy!!
My only email of the day

MILS #31: Super!
Posted on February 03, 2008Welcome to the Weekly MILS (Moms In Law School) Roundup. It is hosted on a rotating basis between PT-LawMom and A Little Fish in Law School blogs. We aim for Sunday posts. Next week, it'll be back at PT-LawMom's place. And now for this week's theme:Have you noticed that all of the advertisements for the last week were related to the Super Bowl, but because of licensing or something, were not able to say Super Bowl? Like come on down and buy a new television to watch the Big Game! The Really Big Game! The Big One!Made me wonder if they had no thesaurus on hand -- they could find no other approriate synonym for Super than Big...
Self-doubt
Posted on February 01, 2008Yeah, for a law student blog, there has been a conspicuous lack of law school bitching lately. So my thoughts on my externship.I am not smart enough to do this. No, really. I am in a position where I am evaluating legal arguments and making recommendations that have impact on real people in the real world, and there is no controlling authority on the propositions I am examining...
Football according to Clownfish
Posted on February 01, 2008I like football because you need to run and see who catches. And they can't catch it and they run and run and they tackle. They need to tackle the person who got the football.(demonstrates running around fast)Touchdown!!!!!!Yep, that's about how I understand it...
Ugg-tacular
Posted on January 30, 2008I don't do "trendy," so I never considered even looking at buying a pair of Ugg boots.I had no idea what I was missing.I got the most uggsome boots from my sister in law for Christmas. They're comfy and warm and soft and I want to live in them for the whole winter...
Ninja lessons
Posted on January 27, 2008Things said by Clownfish:I'm a ninja. Hiya! Hiya! (followed by elaborate quasi-karate-style kicks and jumps)When a ninja falls down he says "I meant to do that."Ninjas are sneaky. Unless they are jumping and they yell Hiya! Hiya!Ninjas try to steal pie from the Samurai...
MILS #30
Posted on January 27, 2008It's up at PtLawmom's Place. Back here next week. Can you believe we've been doing this for 30 weeks already?? That's 3/4 of a pregnancy!
A Challenge...
Posted on January 22, 2008Over at his Dilbert blog, Scott Adams posted an interesting question:Suppose you had to pick one word to describe yourself. Your first reaction, I assume, is that it is impossible. You are so many different things, in so many different contexts. No one word can capture more than a tiny slice...
I didn't want it to come to this, but...
Posted on January 21, 2008Evidence grades were not posted on Friday.Getting the hose ready.Edited to add: A more comprehensive approach has been suggested at T.J.'s Double Play._____________Footnote for people without a sense of humor. My professor probably had grades in on time and it was out of his/her control the the registrar did not post them on Friday...
MILS #29: Double TROUBLE
Posted on January 19, 2008Welcome to the Weekly MILS (Moms In Law School) Roundup. It is hosted on a rotating basis between PT-LawMom and A Little Fish in Law School blogs. We aim for Sunday posts, but with the long weekend, I'm going a little early.Yeah, I know its not my turn...
Day in court?
Posted on January 18, 2008On my mind:Does everyone deserve his day in court? I mean, if he suffers legitimate harms from a plausible claim of negligence, but made the mistake of hiring a lawyer off a billboard who doesn't file things timley or correctly, should he still get his day in court? We never talked about this in civil procedure...
What's going on?
Posted on January 16, 2008Paragraphs of randomness: My externship is going very well so far. The work is challenging, the people are nice, and I am being exposed to many new and different things. 1L Summer Job did not expose me to broad areas of law and procedure, so this has been excellent, and a needed addition to my education...
R.O.U.S. Alert!
Posted on January 16, 2008PARIS (AFP) - Fossil hunters have uncovered the greatest rodent that ever lived -- a one-tonne behemoth that bestrode the swamplands of South America some four million years ago. Measuring a whopping 53 centimetres (21 inches), the skull has massive incisors several centimetres long...
Its not torture when done by professionals, right?
Posted on January 15, 2008Rumor has it professors at my school have to have their grades from last semester posted by this Friday . . . or else.I was wondering, or else what?A stern finger wag?Waterboarding in the cafeteria?
Clownfish's football picks, Part Dos
Posted on January 14, 2008I didn't know about the Packers game until we turned it on and the Packers were down by 14. He picked Green Bay today anyway. Packers win.As to last week's predictions that made it onto the blog in advance:Jaguars (over the Patriots! *I know!*) -- well, we knew he was gonna be wrong there...

Shot by crap.
Posted on January 11, 2008I said recently grades are a crapshoot.Well, for every yin there is a yang.Bus. Ass. came in.I blew it. Lower than I had hoped, though probably not lower than I deserved or expected.Tied for lowest grade in law school with Family. But there are lower grades, and she used the whole curve down to (reportedly) F, so it definitely could have been worse...
Be vewy vewy quiet
Posted on January 09, 2008This semester is going to kick my ass. I can tell already.I will keep up with my bi-weekly MILS responsibilities, but if I disappear for a while, fret not.I am feeling very hopeful right now . . . a little overwhelmed at what's ahead, a little terrified of the "real world" and time commitment of my externship, but hopeful...
Pinch me
Posted on January 08, 2008I thought I got pwned by tax. I've been really upset since, because I studied hard for it, and it was the only class about which I felt good going in.I guess its true what they say if you feel awful coming out of an exam, its probably because you knew so much you felt you didn't address the issues adequately and therefore are sure you bombed...
Clownfish's football picks
Posted on January 06, 2008Bullshark and Clownfish are Patriots fans. The Pats don't play this week.So yesterday, Bullshark asked Clownfish to pick which team he wanted to see win.Clownfish picked the Seahawks and was about as "invested" in a game as a three-year-old can be. He only watched when his team had the ball and did little dances whenever the Seahawks scored...
Sing it!
Posted on January 05, 2008There are amazing things on the internet, but this is the coolest thing I have seen . . . possibly ever. How I am feeling right now, as sung by Chris Isaak, the Doobie Brothers, Judas Priest, Aha! and others. You must turn up the sound and click!(Try typing, "Is this fair use of copy righted material" for Simon and Garfunkel and Madonna!)
The post wherein I attempt to be tuned in to the current political climate and/or popular culture, but in reality am stuck someplace in journal hell
Posted on January 04, 2008Obama! Hillary! Huckabee! Iowa caucus! New Hampshire! Britney cracks up!OMG!!There, that about covers just about anything anyone else blogged about today.
I already know not to sleep with my clients
Posted on January 03, 2008I went to the bookstore to drop $500 on books (used! still at almost full price!) because I wasn't proactive enough to order any on-line and classes start Monday. Though I may still try and return the books I can't get. Anyway...I was considering changing my schedule...
My sentiments exactly
Posted on January 02, 2008BS: Clownfish, eat some more pasta please.CF: My tummy is all fulled up.BS: Oh, then I guess you have no room for a chocolate treat?CF: I have just enough room for a chocolate treat.
Superpowers
Posted on January 02, 2008I was driving northbound on a road (one lane north, one lane south) bordered on both sides by lots of industrial parks and businesses that attract truck traffic. I drive this road every morning. With his view totally unobstructed by residential shrubbery or anything else, a truck driver nearly drove into me broadside when pulling out of a parking lot...
Resolve
Posted on December 31, 2007I don't "do" New Years resolutions. I don't let the flip of a calender page dictate how I choose to live my life. Every few weeks, I go on the kinds of "kicks" people do for the new year -- like giving up fried food or caffeine or pretending to exercise...
MILS #26: The Post-Holiday Roundup
Posted on December 30, 2007The Weekly MILS (Moms In Law School) Roundup is the brainchild of Saramel (retired). It is hosted on a rotating basis between PT-LawMom and A Little Fish in Law School blogs. We aim for Sunday posts. Next week, it'll be back at PT-LawMom's place. This year, the holidays brought the MILS everything they ever wanted, and many things I am sure they didn't, such as:Holiday cuteness...
