Ancient Memories

Posted on September 17, 2009
For no particular reason, I recently remembered a conversation I had with my Elementary School Secretary (hereinafter "ESS") at about 9:00 ante-meridian on fine spring day circa 1986.Iason: "Hi, Ms. ESS. I need a pass."ESS: "Hi, Iason. Why are you so late for school?"Iason: "I slept in...

What I thought of Neal Stephenson's Quicksilver

Posted on September 09, 2009
First a quick note: Quicksilver: Volume One of the Baroque Cycle is not the same book as Quicksilver: The Baroque Cycle #1. The latter is a third of a novel, the former is a fantastically vast and amazing tome of almost 1000 pages. Harper decided to play this bit of publishing chicanery upon us to sell more books to people who were afraid of books that weigh more than chihuahuas...

Watchmen Chapter I

Posted on November 23, 2008
Part of Heiligekuh's Watchman Read-a-Long: The first thing that really struck me this read is the color palette. The muted tones, the color washes, the poor level of color detail. I love it. I understand that most of it is just an artifact of the printing technology of the time, but now it seems fitting...

I'll Tell You What's Not In the Box: Any Part of Andy Samberg

Posted on November 11, 2007
I heretofore declare this blog mostly defunct! Is it possible that this declaratory post de-defuncts this blog? Is it, in fact, made funct? Is funct a word? If not, why? Maybe, because of the newfound functness of this blog, I'll have to start posting again...

Yarr!

Posted on September 19, 2007
That's it. That's all I have to say, after two months of silence. Yarr.

A Panda is NOT a Fixed Medium of Expression

Posted on July 03, 2007
I am a card-carrying member of the Zoological Society of San Diego. I love the Zoo and the Wild Animal Park, I love to hang out and watch the animals, and I love what the Zoological Society's missions and methods are. But when I was recently at the zoo, I noticed this sign posted in the Panda area...

Federal Court: "Fuck You, F.C.C."

Posted on June 05, 2007
Link. (Free Login Required.) Finally, somebody gives the what-for to those power-hungry unconstitutes at the F.C.C. I've long been concerned about what the surprising, sudden, unprecedented imposition of fines for "fleeting expletives." The F.C.C...

Skill City!

Posted on May 19, 2007
Just a quick plug: you should be playing Skill City. It's got a pile of your favorite puzzle games, plus one you've never seen before, with the promise of much more forthcoming. And really, it's all very shinily packaged together. I'm still groovin' on the music, in particular...

Media Review: The Manikin

Posted on May 17, 2007
Medium: NovelAuthor: Joanna ScottOriginal Publication: 1996Scott's prose has never ceased to captivate me in the past, and The Manikin was no exception. Her writing is haunting; somehow distant and cool while at the same time intensely personal and touching...

"Take A Deep Breath" is Definitely the Best Advice I've Received All Day

Posted on April 30, 2007
I'm sorry posting has been sporadic, to say the least. I'm just not sure what the focus the TMA should be now. For that matter, I'm not really sure what the focus of Iason's life is, either. I guess I could complain about the trials and tribulations of a contract attorney, but I could never match of to the horrors faced regularly in New York...

Iason, Nay, The World, Needs Your Help

Posted on March 08, 2007
I'm in the process of crafting a presentation on how people use PowerPoint (and other "slideware" programs) poorly. Or, better stated, how the abominable mis-use of PowerPoint leads to wretched presentations and lectures. Or, how PowerPoint is the downfall of modern society...

Con.

Posted on March 05, 2007
Dearest geeky friends of mine:We now live in what is, for one week every year, indisputably the geekiest town in the world. I speak of no other than The Con (no, not that one, this one!)Mark your calendars, buy your tickets, and inform your employers...

Itsy-Bitsy Yellow With Polka Dots Bikini?

Posted on February 13, 2007
So, I'm more-or-less employed, finally. I got sick of spinning my wheels at home in front of the computer (no offense, computer), so I went to my employment agency and I asked for anything. So, I'm the receptionist for an certain not-for-profit local agency that, while it isn't explicitly in the business of practicing law, is swarming with lawyers nevertheless...

See, Mom, I Told You Video Games Are Good For You!

Posted on January 19, 2007
A Reuters Health Report released today said that video games can be good for your emotional well-being. "Mastering challenges in video games can be a healthy way of coping when opportunities for feeling independent or competent are scarce in the real world...

DJ Drama Arrested for Making Mix Tapes

Posted on January 18, 2007
Because commentary on current events will lend me a tiny amount of respectability: link. Basically, this guy is providing a service (making hip-hop mix tapes), and by this account doing the industry a favor, and the RIAA pays him back by getting him arrested and sent up on racketeering charges...

Feliz Nuevo Año!

Posted on January 07, 2007
Spent the long new year's weekend in Las Gaviotas, Mexico, with some pals. Here, in excruciating detail, is what we did:Sit in the sun.Eat.Play board games.Drink beer.Rinse, Repeat.Which was awesome, but then I had to come back to still not having a job, which is getting harder...

Tiny Claims

Posted on December 17, 2006
My two years at Small Claims Court taught me a lot. Mostly, that people are stupid. All that nonsense you see on The People's Court is real. Real people are really like that. Every day. Anyway, the only difference between small claims on teevee and real life is the judges, who aren't personalities and aren't funny, and don't try to teach the audience any sort of "life lessons" or some bullshit...

ADR MoZ

Who Tube? You Tube.

For the record, the "bitches" I'm continuously instructing to "taste it" are the CA State Bar. Don't you try to keep me out, for I will make you taste it.

Extra! Extra!

Posted on November 12, 2006
This just in! A sandwich is not the same as a burrito. In other news: green is not the same as red, and a cat is not the same as a dog. Thank you, American judiciary, for stating the obvious for us. I don't think could've been the adjudicator for this case...

Taste it, Pubs!*

Posted on November 09, 2006
You like like that, republicans? You like how that tastes? Does it taste like sweet, sweet, glorious defeat? Hmm? Two words, bitches: subpoena. power. You best figure out quick how to live in a government where you actually have to be accountable for the shit you do...

How to Get Precisely What You Want, Even From Beyond the Grave

Posted on October 18, 2006
The FCC has taken away my license for being able to describe myself as a ranter-against-the-bad-things-companies-do (hence me having to change the masthead description), since I haven't been doing it enough, mostly because I was beginning to sound like a broken record, even to myself...

Sometimes, Ice Floats Seem Like a Pretty Good Idea

Posted on October 10, 2006
What is it about old people in this town? Let me start over. Point 1: We live in La Jolla, sure, but we live in the cheap-o, close-to-campus, condoland part of La Jolla. No old people live here. None. The rest of La Jolla, is, in a word, filthy stinkin' rich...

Re-Stowin' the Hold

Posted on September 20, 2006
Ahoy from the wilds of La Jolla. Yarr. I know I missed International Talk Like a Pirate Day, but, you know, I was a little busy. Driving over the Grapevine, piling all our stuff into our new place, helping the cats exorcise the air monkeys, you know how it is...

Tom Petty Was Right

Posted on September 11, 2006
Steps of the test of Minimum Competence, in ascending order of difficulty (that means easiest first, nimrod):1) Taking the damn thing. Ripping off the band-aid. Getting it over with, already. 2) Studying. Studying and panicking and studying and worrying that you haven't been studying enough and studying some more...

He Says, As He Jumps Off a Cliff

Posted on July 25, 2006
