So, something happened today. Something

Posted on October 02, 2010
So, something happened today. Something that is too private to blog about. But something that makes it seem more likely that my family will be leaving the Kenai area. Maybe even Alaska. I won't talk about it. Those of you who know me know how livid I was today...

So, hog killing day. A freezer

Posted on October 02, 2010
So, hog killing day. A freezer full of pork. Skinning hogs is different than most critters, especially as we were trying to save the fat. Takes a little practice. Tomorrow is butchering day. We try to make a day out of it. A bunch of people help, we drink a few beers, listen to music and then afterwards cook up a bunch of ribs or something...

So, four years with the Alaska

Posted on September 27, 2010
So, four years with the Alaska Public Defender Agency. To be honest, I'm not sure how I feel about it. Where the hell has the time gone? The only concrete difference is that I am now vested 75% in my retirement account. 364 days until 100%! To 'celebrate' I went out bird hunting on a spectacular fall day...

So, get used to it AJ. She is

Posted on September 23, 2010
So, get used to it AJ. She is coming. So is winter. I wish I could say I am slowing down. Work is crazy. It is made worse by the fact that the DA's phones have not been working for 10 days or so. What a joke. We live in the richest state in the richest country in the history of the world and the State cannot have working phones? Yeah sure...

So, there are a lot of good things

Posted on September 20, 2010
So, there are a lot of good things about fall in Alaska. For me, one of the best is having almost everything on the plate something I grew or caught myself. Of course we are far from self sufficient. I don't grow wheat for the flour. I don't go down to Cook Inlet and evaporate water for sea salt...

So, July may have sucked but September

Posted on September 12, 2010
So, July may have sucked but September is stunning. I went out camping on Tustumena lake. I know, I know I keep writing about it, but the place is so stunning it really is my favorite place on Earth. When I go, I want my ashes spread there. We just did the regular stuff...

So, my new trial motion for Mr.

Posted on September 10, 2010
So, my new trial motion for Mr. Eacker has made the news. It was on the front page of the Fairbanks Daily News Miner today and on TV on KTUU. I'm not going to say more than is in the public record. Oh God how I want to, especially as the news doesn't have it all correct...

So Tustumena Lake on Labor day.

Posted on September 07, 2010
So Tustumena Lake on Labor day. I must admit I was annoyed when I pulled into the parking lot and saw a million boat trailers. I wasn't thinking that it was a long weekend. Moose season. And a stunning day. The water on the entire lake (and we went to the very back) was like glass...

So, I am busy sealing a shed against

Posted on August 30, 2010
So, I am busy sealing a shed against the squirrels when a neighbor shouts my name. Turns out he took some folks halibut fishing and they caught two: a 60 pounder and a 180 pounder. After berating them for taking a big breeding female, I saw that the fish just weren't being dealt with...

So, the police just suck. The longer

Posted on August 26, 2010
So, the police just suck. The longer I practice law, the more I wonder what the hell they are good for except to bully the People. I hope the jury pounds this case so far up his ass that he shits paper the rest of his life. Of course, I have learned the hard way that may not happen...

So, last night I was looking at

Posted on August 25, 2010
So, last night I was looking at an old book I own called simply "Barns". It made me hungry for something different. I miss the smell of horses. I miss the creak of a saddle. I miss it a lot. I don't know why I am writing this post. But I feel like I am on the verge of another life change...

So, I haven't written in a while.

Posted on August 21, 2010
So, I haven't written in a while. No excuse. It has rained since June and for the last few days it has been clear and blue and in the 60's. The rain is coming back Sunday so I have been outside doing everything from sleeping to painting to getting firewood...

So. 99 years. We'll see about

Posted on August 15, 2010
So. 99 years. We'll see about it. Hang tight Jimmy.

So. My garden. It sucks ass for

Posted on August 13, 2010
So. My garden. It sucks ass for the most part. In July we had 23 days of rain. 23! One of the rainiest summers ever. Slugs are everywhere, despite my best efforts. Most things are not growing right or are just rotting right in the ground. A lot of the plants have turned to mush...

So, goodbyes are a part of life.

Posted on August 09, 2010
So, goodbyes are a part of life. Next week the interns leave and so does Jesse. It will get much, much quieter around here. To celebrate agreat summer, I threw a little party. Did the usual thing. Fire. '80's music. The usual. I must admit that I was concerned when three women showed up last May...

So, I'm broke. My own fault I

Posted on July 30, 2010
So, I'm broke. My own fault I suppose. To a certain extent, I have made some choices that caused this. But this just isn't working anymore. My paycheck just went down $350 because of increased medical premiums. It went back up $100 because of a 2% raise but we are still short $250 a month...

So, Tustumena glacier. We finally

Posted on July 25, 2010
So, Tustumena glacier. We finally made it! And, more importantly, I figured out how to do it. There is simply nothing on the internet about how to get to this glacier. I had this brilliant idea of finding the outermost glacial braid and using our waders to cross it...

So, this job is hopeless. But I

Posted on July 21, 2010
So, this job is hopeless. But I try. Again and again and again and again and again.

So, the weather this summer is

Posted on July 18, 2010
So, the weather this summer is starting to become annoying. I took the Interns halibut fishing yesterday. For once it did not rain (although it is making up for it today by just pouring) but the wind kicked up and the water got rough. In fact, it was the first time I almost lost anyone...

So, it is 2 am. Dipnetting. Off

Posted on July 17, 2010
So, it is 2 am. Dipnetting. Off the river by 11. Cutting fish. Oh, so many fish. The Kenai river was a zoo. Every Alaskan with a boat was there. Now bed for 6 hours and then halibut fishing out of Homer again. Only a few weeks left to fill my freezer...

So, halibut fishing. First, let

Posted on July 12, 2010
So, halibut fishing. First, let me start off by saying it was not as successful as I wanted. We did not limit out and we caught chickens. It rained. Bill got sick and we had to retreat to Seldovia. The boat sucked up something into the jet and was being stupid...

So, dipnetting. To be honest, I

Posted on July 07, 2010
So, dipnetting. To be honest, I am torn about it. On the one hand there is the crowds. The jackasses who get drunk and ruin the dunes with their 4 wheelers. The people who don't respect the resource or the place where we live. Who take more than they need...

So, I wish I had more to write

Posted on July 01, 2010
So, I wish I had more to write about than the usual. Trips to Tustumena and the like. I feel like it is a slow summer. I haven't been fishing yet. I had a minor surgery that has taken me out of commission for a week. There have been periods of rain for a week at a time...

So, happy summer Solstice. Well,

Posted on June 22, 2010
So, happy summer Solstice. Well, not really. For now the Earth tilts back towards the cold and dark. I much prefer December 21. But to celebrate, I took my family onto Tustumena lake for the first time. I mean why not 'celebrate' in one of my favorite places? I also took the Interns, and Bill, to Caribou Island, near Cape Monica, and cooked salmon and rabbit...

So happy Father's day to me. Took

Posted on June 21, 2010
So happy Father's day to me. Took the girls on the boat for the first time this year. After a week of rain, the sun finally came out this afternoon. Just in time to go back to work. Kadee got to drive the boat, and a good time was had by all.

So, Alaska gets a new bail statute

Posted on June 18, 2010
So, Alaska gets a new bail statute on July 1, 2010. It has some problems. I can hear the DA's now. Howling that we scumbag defense lawyers are making meritless arguments. Or as a DA in a recent trial put it, "the Constitution blah blah blah". I am not kidding...

So, chicken killing day. I set

Posted on June 13, 2010
So, chicken killing day. I set aside one day every June to fill the freezer with chicken. Cornish Cross are amazing. From egg size to big roasters in 8 weeks. The last three years I have had the interns help. This year was no different. Except these interns had never killed or plucked a chicken...

So, I may be broker than I have

Posted on June 11, 2010
So, I may be broker than I have ever been. The rash of broken items continues. I haven't even listed all the things that have broken or failed in the last few months. But, what the hell. For a few dollars in fuel I can go to Tustumena. We can get around Caribou Island and back for about 8 gallons...

So, Kenai lake. Not much to report

Posted on June 05, 2010
So, Kenai lake. Not much to report and that is how I like it. I took the Interns to the lake. The boat worked. The baked salmon was delicious. I am hoping it turns out to be a good summer after all. The Interns are convincing me not to worry about the fact they are women and do the stuff that I do...

So, as the wife would say, "faaaaaiiiinnnnnnnnggg

Posted on June 04, 2010
So, as the wife would say, "faaaaaiiiinnnnnnnnggg interns yeah". Oh the evening started as usual. A fire. I barbecued some salmon burgers. We listened to Super Tramp a few dozen times. Some of us drank. I lent my Rhino to the interns. You know, the usual stuff on a summer night...
