: Stephen's LighthouseApple and Sony: It?s all about the money. Duh.

If you haven’t been following the story today about the dispute between Apple and Sony where Apple disallowed the Sony Reader app from their app store, here’s some stuff to read:

“It seems that Apple is no longer going to be content to allow apps to access content purchased elsewhere unless it comes with an identical option to purchase the content from within the app as well.”

In short, it appears to be all about the money. Your worry about as a book reader is that your purchases could disappear from your reader based on the business needs of the providers. You opportunity as a library – libraries remain neutral and we support any device that supports us and neutral e-book standards.
This story is developing and will be one of the great stories of this decade as we see what freedom to read looks like when it’s done. After all, libraries and librarians care about the bigger picture.
It’s too bad (and ironic) that when businesses block other businesses it is bigger news than when businesses block libraries from their devices . . . Maybe library land should float ourselves on the stock NASDAQ?
