: Law School SurvivorSo You want to go to Law School....
By Tyler Larsen
- Start planning for it at the beginning of your junior year.
- Spend the money and take a commercial LSAT course. Your admission to law school is going to depend on your LSAT score and GPA. (It raised my score 20 points)
- Take the Fall LSAT of your senior year.
- Get your applications in by December. You have a better chance of getting in and to qualify for scholarships most schools have a scholarship deadline.
- Apply to a least 10 schools.
- Apply to some "safety" schools. (where your GPA and LSAT score are higher than the average admit).
- Apply to some "Reach" schools. (where you GPA and LSAT are lower than the average)
- I found the Boston College Law School Locator to be very helpful in picking which schools to apply to.
- The admissions essay is very important. My advice for the essay is to pick 5 stories from your personal life that demonstrate who you are. Work them out. Be aware that each school has their own length requirement. Some schools require 2 pages and some require 3 pages. Personalize each essay for each school by including a small paragraph at the end of the essay. State the schools name and why your qualities(from the stories) make you a good fit for the school.
I took the February LSAT and turned my applications in very late. I credit being accepted at a few schools and wait listed at a few others to having a decent LSAT score. Applying late means you have to have better than normal scores to get in because there are fewer spots. It can be done though I just want everyone to have a better chance than I gave myself.
