North Carolina Senate Takes Up Racial Justice Act

The North Carolina Senate convenes at 3:00 pm (EDT) today and SB 461is on the agenda.  The Senate passed an earlier version of the legislation.  If the Senate concurs today with changes made in the NC House of Representatives, the measure would go to the governor.  If the Senate does not concur, a conference committee of House and Senate members would work out differences.  A conference committee report would then require approval by both bodies.The Senate session will be webcast here.Today's News & Observer carries the OpEd, "Race as a death penalty factor," by Matthew Robinson, an Appalachian State University prof and author of Death Nation: The Experts Explain Capital Punishment.Several arguments are being made against the North Carolina Racial Justice Act, which is up for a state Senate vote...continue to full post
