Ain't No Party

By Anne Skove, Esq.

ADVERTISEMENTS

There are many, many things that one should not take into a courthouse: switched-on cell phones, firearms, and party supplies.

Does that stop anyone? Apparently not. Some people are starting the long weekend early, and in all the wrong places.

In Salt Lake City, a teenager brought mini bottles of alcohol and at least one prescription pill to court. See Prosecutors: Teen Carried Liquor, Pill, into Courthouse, Nate Carlisle, Salt Lake Tribune (May 21, 2009).

It's not a party until something explodes! We don't know how to make one of these (honest!) but a beer keg fire bomb was left outside a federal courthouse. See 2 Charged with Leaving Beer Keg Bomb at Sacramento Courthouse, AP (May 21, 2009).

Finally, what better way to celebrate your traffic court hearing than by showing up inebriated? A Pennsylvania man got tired of waiting for his hearing to start so waited around at local bars. This gives passing the bar a whole new meaning, and is yet another reason to expedite cases. See Cops: Man Came Drunk to Traffic Court Hearing, Melanie Hirshberg, Daily Record (May 16, 2009).
