: Legal Pad | LAJudge Jay Arcellana, head of the state unemployment appeals board, is fired
By Jason Siegel
Chief administrative law judge Jay Arcellana was fired by the Unemployment Insurance Appeals Board for having a significant backlog and a deliberate delay in issuing decisions, the Associated Press reported.
While federal standards call for handling 60 percent of unemployment cases within 30 days, only 6% were resolved during that period and with a 46,000 case backlog, according to the AP. Arcellana, who has 20 to leave state employment or go back to his civil service position as an administrative law judge, told the AP that alternate federal guidelines were met and that there wasn't a deliberate delay in issuing decisions.
