The University of Alabma School of Law, located in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, is competitive, but this is partly because it is a good value for any perspective law student, but especially ones with connections to Alabama.
Listed as Number Three on PreLaw Magazine's best values in law schools, Bama Law has an in-state tuition of only $9,736.00 a year, and it has an out of state tuition of $22,170 (which is still competitive compared to private law schools). It has a whopping 97% bar passage rate for first time takers compared with only 79% for the State of Alabama as a whole. And, 93.6% of its graduating classes find employment quickly. Further, there are more expensive places to live than Alabama.
Claude Reeves, the assistant dean for admissions, to PreLaw that the law school "strives to offer a top-rate education without charging its students unreasonable tuition. Our lower tuition provides students and graduates with options because they are not saddled with large amounts of student loan debt."
The law school has enjoyed visits from 8 U.S. Supreme Court justices. It has a Public interest Institute to encourage students to work for non-profit or government agencies. It has a public-interest certificate program. And it has 100 spots per year in six different legal clinics that it runs. So, we are talking about practical learning.
It has just expanded its law school building with a $15 million addition and renovations. It offers a joint JD/MBA program, ad JD/PhD in political science and economics, and LL.M. programs in international law and tax law.
Hugo Black is one of the schools famous alumni.
