Do we have a pipeline problem?
Posted on November 12, 2009After I posted yesterday about the NAWL survey, I couldn't sleep. Despite what I suggested in my original post, I am concerned about the findings, actually deeply concerned (well, except about the rainmaking finding). That concern leads me to this question: Do we have a pipeline problem? One of the main premises upon which the NAWL report is based is that for more than two decades women have graduated from law schools and started careers in private practice at about the same rate as men...

Her AmLaw Daily piece on self-promotion skills is no exception. After identifying external factors, like unconscios bias, that hinder women's advancement in law firm hierarachies, Gillette points the finger at women as well, arguing that a failure to effectively take credit when it's due and ask for advancement when it's available also stops women from excelling within firm structures...

Do Solo Practice Women Lawyers Charge Less Than Their Male Counterparts?
Posted on February 24, 2008In December of 2007, ALM Research released the results of its survey of 5,000 lawyers working in small and midsize firms and solo practices. The respondents were 78% male and 22% female, which could mean that fewer women work in smaller firms and solo practice; or that women were less inclined to participate; or that fewer women are "leader, manager, partner, shareholder, or owner" of these firms, since ALM reports that these were the majority of the people answering the survey...

Choosing a Law School
Posted on February 18, 2008Law school is as much about receiving an education as it is about networking and making connections, both in the intellectual and in the career-building sense. Going to a brand-named law school will open doors by name alone. However, are these doors, traditionally ones that open and close for men on men?s terms (see any number of writings about the glass ceiling or pink ghetto), the doors that women want to travel through? In my own law school application process, I visited about ten schools prior to applying (ranging from top tier to bottom tier)...

Do you cry because you're sad, or because you're angry? [Clippings]
Posted on February 08, 2008About a week ago, we had a discussion (prompted by coverage of Hillary Clinton) about attorneys showing emotion, either tearing up or outright crying. Jezebel has a related post up, asking their (mostly female) readership: do you cry because you're angry, or because you're sad? The comments thread is interesting--and supportive, if you're one of many women who tears up more easily than she would like...
Ruminations of a law school mama
Posted on February 07, 2008I?m so proud of myself ? I earned a place on the Dean?s list! While I don?t like to admit it, this is my first time on the Dean?s list and to be so highly ranked since High School. I have finally remembered how to work and study. Can you be likable and still get ahead?
Posted on February 06, 2008I read Are You Living Your Life Like You're Planning to Fail on Ms. JD the other day and thought of it immediately when I read this article in the New York Times on the imposter phenomenon. The imposter phenomenon was coined by two therapists in the 1970s "to describe the internal experience of a group of high-achieving women who had a secret sense they were not as capable as others thought...

Are You Living Your Life Like You're Planning to Fail?
Posted on January 28, 2008I think many of us introduce ourselves, our ideas, and our work with any number of disclaimers: "maybe this is a stupid question, but..."; "I don't know that much about this, but..."; "I'm probably wrong, but..." I think I couch my viewpoints as a way to avoid appearing confrontational or as a way to mitigate the perception of error - that is, if my substantive contribution is correct, then great, but if not, then at least I predicted that and got something right...

Who Will Listen?
Posted on January 17, 2008Okay, so yesterday I posted a little about how it is foolish to not give young women attorney's a seat at the table of discussion about work/life balance. Perhaps I could've made it clearer but I just don't get why law firm decision makers would listen to scholars, "experts" and other partners about what it is that the current generation is looking for in life and exclude the opinions of the very people they are trying to recruit and retain...
