Statute of limitations for unpaid hospital bill

I signed myself out of a hospital because I thought the care was negligent. I am a nurse and know a great deal about medical care. I was in the hospital a year ago for less then 12 hours and they sent me a bill for over $6,000.00. I have had three different collection agencies call me over the last 6 or 7 months, but noone has sent me a letter. The last one that called was very intimidating and harassing and threatneded me about my house. I was also told that I had to pay a certain amount which was $100.00 a month towards the bill. I have my medical records from this visit which shows poor and and in my opinion negligent care. What can I do? Do I need to get a lawyer?
