Can police do this? entering a property and look over a fence?

At our friend's house we were all there, we were there for about an hour and it was about 1AM when four Pt. Pleasant Police came on a noise complaint. The back yard, where we all were was surrounded by a fence, a wood fence that cant be seen through that is 6ft high at its lowest point. The officer put his light over the fence and said "Hide that stuff." Me and my friends in a panic began saying "Hide the stuff!" and putting empty beer cans in the garbage. The officer than said "who said hide the stuff? Open this gate!" we then let him in. He asked who said "Hide that stuff?" and we replied "you did." and he said "no, some one said it before me." I am not sure but cant it be the officer used that as a means to enter the property? Further more can the officer look over a obvious boundary like a 6ft fence?
