Is this legal

I Have recently been involved in a situation I can't talk about. but it is a non violent situation. I was sitting in my apartment when two police officers came and walked through my whole house and then placed me in handcuffs. I asked if I was being arrested for something and they said no but yet I was still being placed in handcuffs and read my rights and they took me to the station. In all honesty they had no idea why they were there at all except that they were supposed to come get me. Is it legal for them to walk through my house like that? is it legal for them to not even know why they are there? and is it legal for me to be placed in handcuffs and taken away but still not technically "arrested" as they said but they still read me my rights.
