Will quick claiming a deed on a property that may go into foreclosure absolve me of responsibility for the debt?

My mother co-signed for a granddaughter buy a home. After my niece's marriage broke up, my mother did a Quick Claim Deed over to her granddaughter so that her ex husband had no rights to the home. Since then, the home is going into foreclosure (seven payments behind). Will my mother be held responsible for the debt on the home? Will this effect her credit? What should my mother do?
