I was charged with a felony 35 years ago , when I was 18 for being guilty by association

I was under the impression I could still purchace a rifle for pheasant hunting, just not a pistol, I entered the gun store,picked out a nice rifle and took it to the counter, I was asked to fill out a form,half way throuth, it said felony check, and I asked, and was told I could not make the purchace,feeling foolish, I asked for the paper that had much of my personal info on it, a was told that I could not have it, that the government said for them to keep it, and that it would be safe there,is this true? and can I get the form back? Not guilty in michigan but two hoodlums took me all the way down 35 years ago, I'm honest, and God fearing,anything I can do?, please help, much thanks to everyone .
