How can a teen be charged with theft because the friend he was with stole a video game

My son and an acquaintence were leaving the store the guy had stolen video games in his book bag with his name in it. Teens says bag was not his, however they found his name and books with his name in the bag. My son searched and found to have nothing nor did anyone claim to see him take anything. The police come and charge both teens with theft. I am in ohio
