Plumbing the Depths

By John Pieret

ADVERTISEMENTS

Alan Keyes' Renew America site is a low-rent version of WingNutDaily entered in the ongoing limbo contest of "how low can you go" among the Rabid Right "media." One of Renew America's regular contributors is Rev. Michael Bresciani, self-described as a Christian author and a columnist for several online sites and magazines whose articles "are now read in every country in the world." Fortunately for it, most of the world can't read English.

His latest effort is another in the dreary line of "secularists (by which he obviously means "atheists") believe in evolution because they are rebelling against God" screeds that is even less imaginative than most. He actually drags out "the complexity of the human eye" as proof positive of intelligent design; claims it takes more faith to believe in evolution than in God; and appeals to "[s]omething within each of us ... [that] can't accept that a bolt of lightning hit the primordial ooze and out popped all this living and incredibly balanced and ecologically ordered living matter" as if it was a cogent argument.

Inevitably the fallacy of distribution pops up in the form of "evolution must be untrue because we don't know what caused the Big Bang." But here he displays some panache by so screwing up the idea of the Big Bang that it is the equivalent of the Three Stooges doing a plumbing job:

Somewhere back in time the nebulous gasses and particulates aimlessly wandering around the universe came together, and then by pure chance perhaps a cosmic lightning bolt ignited the entire cloud in a big bang. Behold, the universe was born!

Could someone turn off the water before the entire internet is flooded?
