: The GavelOn the 65th Anniversary of D-Day
By Speaker Pelosi
Sixty-five years ago, well more than one hundred thousand brave Americans and their allies stormed the beaches of Normandy. Many more attacked by sea and by air. Their mission was one of the most difficult ever attempted and its success is one of the proudest moments in America?s very proud history. It remains one of the greatest examples of bravery and military strategy the world has ever known.
On D-Day, American troops changed the fate of millions. Within 100 days of their landing, Paris had been liberated and Nazi troops driven out of France. Less than a year later, victory in Europe was declared.
In remembrance of those who died on those beaches, we vow to honor all of our veterans as the heroes they are. Just as our military leaves no soldier behind on the battlefield, we must leave no veteran behind when they come home. And as we remember D-Day, let us all thank those who wear, or who have worn, our nation?s uniform for their patriotism and their service.
