Six NJ Women Hospitalized after Getting Injections of Caulk for Butt Enhancement

The New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) and State Board of Medical Examiners (BME) are investigating cases of six women who developed infections and other complications after receiving bogus cosmetic injections.

Officials believe unlicensed medical providers administered injections of hardware-grade caulk, the same used to caulk bathtubs, in a buttocks enhancement procedure.

The women, from the Essex County area, were treated in Essex County hospitals after developing infections and other complications needing surgical and antibiotic treatment.

'Fortunately, these women are being treated and are recovering,' said Dr. Tina Tan, state epidemiologist. 'But, there is the potential for more serious complications if these infections are not treated early and properly.'

DHSS issued an alert to hospitals, physicians and the statewide health care community in February after learning of the infections, warning to be on the lookout for more incidences and to report any suspected cases. The agency continues to look for the person or persons responsible.

'If people are interested in getting cosmetic injections or other cosmetic procedures, we recommend they seek the advice of their physician to find out how to get these procedures done safety,' Tan added. 'But if you have already received a procedure from an unlicensed provider and suspect you might have an infection or are ill, inform your health care provider.'

Medical malpractice can result in serious injuries and even deaths. Medical malpractice occurs when a physician or other medical care provider does not follow the "reasonable standard of care" for a patient in a similar medical situation. This standard of care is based on what other people in similar professions would do when faced with the same situation. If you have been injured as the result of medical malpractice or negligence while you were under the care of a physician or a patient in a hospital, you may be able to file a claim and collect compensation for pain and suffering, lost wages, medical expenses and other losses. Call Napoli Bern Ripka, LLP at 888-529-4669 today to discuss your legal options.
