Making Sure Your Child Gets to School Safely Part Two

By Oguz Ozdemir

ADVERTISEMENTS

Every day you read about more and more innocent children being abducted. With the new school year upon us, what can you do to protect your child and make sure that they are able to get to and from school safely?

When it comes to your children, you can never be too concerned with safety. It only takes a moment for an abduction to occur and the rest of your life to regret not implementing those extra precautions that could have prevented this from happening.

Making children aware of their environment is oftentimes easier said than done. It has been shown on major news programs that even when children know not to speak to someone they do not know, when approached by a stranger who acts as if he lost his little dog, most kids throw caution to the wind and help the stranger willingly. The child wouldn't even look like he or she were being abducted at this point.

Number one is drilling it into your child's head to not under any circumstance, speak to a stranger. It is always easier to keep your child from getting into this type of situation in the first place. Set up situations with people that you know that your child has never met and test this out, especially with small children.

Make sure that your child knows all of the traffic rules of the road. Kids are good at remembering things when they are repeated often enough and it seems that they are receptive to stopping and looking both ways when crossing the street.

If your child is young you will most likely either drive him or her to school or escort them to their bus stop. If you pick your child up from school make sure that they know that you will be there to pick them up and set up a plan with them in case you were to run late for some unforeseen reason. Talk with the child's teacher as well and make sure that you and she have contact phone numbers (cell phones would be the best route) in case of emergency situations.

Try to teach young children their name, address and phone number as soon as they can retain it. Knowing this information will help expedite things in case of an emergency. And it is always helpful when trying to get a lost child back to the right place and parents.

If your child rides to and from school on a school bus, make sure that they share any information on troublemakers and bullies whether they themselves are the victims or not. Handling this from the start will keep your child from being the next victim.

Making sure that your child gets to and from school safely should be the smallest thing you have to worry about every day. If you have a plan in place you are already one step ahead of things.

If your child has been the victim of negligent actions from school authorities, day care employees or school bus drivers, call our legal team at Napoli Bern Ripka and we will be happy to advise you of your rights as a parent. Call 1-888-LAW-IN-NY today for a free consultation.
