A Pennsylvania jury has ordered a Scranton-area hospital and two physicians to pay $1.2 million to the widow of a retired railroad worker who died after being sent home from the emergency room. According to the lawsuit, Tyler Memorial Hospital, Dr. Daniel Costner and Dr. Jeffrey Lubin were negligent for failing to detect that the patient had an ulcerated and perforated esophagus that ultimately led to his death. The esophageal condition allowed food to enter the pleural cavity causing blood poisoning, an autopsy later revealed.
