A Commitment is Required for Those Who Want Change

The Woodlands Tax Day Tea Party

Regular readers of my site will notice that it’s been several weeks since my last posting, and I’ll blame an excruciatingly busy — and blessed — life for that. Things are going really well at home, at work and at church, and my wife and I had the opportunity to recently vote in Georgia’s primary. I so enjoy the fact that we, as Americans, have the privilege of making our voices heard at such a fundamental level in the legislative process.

And this segues perfectly into what I hope and believe will be beginning approximately 97 days from today.

The question: Do you really want change? As in, honest-to-goodness change towards freedom and liberty for individual rights?

To be perfectly honest, through the end of 2009 and the first part of 2010, while I have supported the proposition of the Tea Party movement, I questioned its ability (and presently still do) to truly effect change in the body politic. Granted, when the likes of Senator Arlen Specter got “primaried” in Pennsylvania’s voting (there have been other poignant examples; this just happens to be the key point I could think of at the moment), I began to realize that this Tea Party thing truly meant business and wasn’t a huge fad; but can it keep it up?

Then, after reading the likes of The Rothenberg Political Report, The Cook Political Report and Taegan Goddard’s Political Wire (these are but three of the great political handicappers out there), local polling continued to show that not only is the US House completely up for grabs in 2010, but there’s a reasonably good chance that so, too is the US Senate.

OK, for the sake of grassroots efforts such as the Tea Party, so far, so good.

However, even with gale-force winds heading towards politically wiping out DC, are we committed to pursuing freedom and liberty beyond November 2, 2010?

The cliche’ is absolutely true: freedom is not free, and it takes sacrifice — at the very least, the sacrifice of time and energy to keep the governing accountable to the governed.

Are you really ready to make that kind of commitment to America? It’s not just about one election; after all, modern liberalism in all of its forms has been building the welfare/nanny state over the past several decades. You do realize that it’s going to take more than one election to turn things back towards individual freedom and liberty for the American society, yes?

Regarding presidential eligibility, I’ve gotta say — while I have previously tracked (to the nth degree) the movement within the movement, the bottom line with this issue is that nobody outside of the President himself really knows for sure about his background. Moreover, do you really need the media or the so-called “O-bots” to become convinced of one way of thinking in order to validate your way of thinking?

I certainly hope not, because eligibility is a small part of the bigger issue of overall government accountability.

And I know that there is a rhetorical smorgasbord of issues on the front burner right now — Arizona and illegal immigration, Ms. Sherrod, Rep. Charlie Rangel’s multiple ethics violations, Wikileaks (the list goes on) — the time will come to properly rectify what’s going on.

For those of you who are Christian (really, anyone who exercises their God-given faith), while I don’t want to tell you to not pray, I would suggest not using prayer as a crutch — an excuse — not to take action. God a-l-w-a-y-s answers prayers; if he hasn’t answered yours yet, it’s time for you to get busy waiting. You have goals, right? (Tell me you do, because if you don’t, you’re not going to be very effective in your commitment to holding government accountable to you) Well, then, since God created you, and it’s very likely you already know how God answers you (timing is a whole other issue altogether), get going using the talents/abilities God’s given you as a prep for not only election day, but as a means of getting you mature enough to handle the adult responsibility of maintaining good government.

Oh, you thought that politics and religion were mutually exclusive? Then you’ll have to ask yourself why the American founding fathers decided to invoke the Creator in the Declaration of Independence.

Here, check this out.

Do you know that there is a right and wrong in society? Then you agree that there’s a moral law, correct? Well, then, if there’s a moral law by which society differentiates right from wrong, there must be a moral Law Giver, yes? There also cannot be evil in society if there is no moral law, right? Otherwise you’d never know that there is such a thing as good and evil without their being some sort of moral standard in existence.

I think you see where I’m going with this. (Apologetics plug: see Ravi Zacharias (rzim.org), a fellow Atlantan, for vastly more like this and better expounding of fundamental biblical truths than I could ever postulate)

Since there is a moral law in every society, and since the American founding fathers set forth the least imperfect form of government meant to protect both individual and group freedom and liberty, it’s time to make a commitment towards this end.

Please realize that this year’s election is but one step on the journey of a thousand miles. And those with whom we disagree are not going to go away silently into the proverbial night. They are going to fight at least as strongly against those who believe in individual freedom and liberty as we (hopefully) will be fighting towards that end.

Are you willing to make that kind of commitment beyond 2010?

If you are not willing to make such a commitment, then the war is over for you — enjoy your proverbial (hopefully, for everyones’ sakes, not literal) shackles upon your life as the federal leviathan encroaches further and further into your life and mine.

If you are willing to make such a commitment, then depending on God’s purpose for your life, you might become like New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, Arizona’s Gov. Jan Brewer, or Louisiana’s Gov. Bobby Jindal as well as many others who’ve made their commitment — having to fight for every move forward towards more freedom and liberty.

Above all, once you’ve made the commitment, you can never give up. If you do give up, it will become ten times harder to make up the lost ground.

It starts — and ends — with you and me.

Let’s grab the Tea and popcorn.
