Change

I know the joke.  Give me a dollar and I will give you change.  Since the term "change" has permeated the presidential campaign of every presidential candidate, I thought I would tell you what Alvin Toffler had to say about change.  Alvin Toffler is the father of the Third Wave.  He said, "Change is not merely necessary to life - it is life".

Change is not required in life so much as the very act of living and moving forward (or backward) in this World is an act of change.

Change has become such a potent message in this presidential campaign because change -- life -- is accelerating at such speed these days.  When you fail to change, or change rapidly enough for your own good, there will be devastation.

Many lawyers and law firms just are not keeping up.  Their ambitions are too high for their position in this World.  As a result, their earnings are not sufficient, their overhead is too much, their cheap tech prowess is deficient, and their work-life blending or balance is all out of wack.  This is because the cost of traditional business society is becoming too much, too quickly.  Fuel costs is rising.  Office space is spiking.  The cost of using paper is huge.  Staff salaries need to soar to keep up.  Insurance premiums are following suit.  And, with all of this, Big Business and consumers both are cutting costs - meaning your earnings.

The reason is that change is upon us.  Life now demands that you radically reduce your time demands and cost demands to meet the deflation of earnings.  And, in this most lawyers just are not ready.

Move home!  Get rid of your staff, or send your staff home!  Cut costs!  Cut commutes!  Cut overhead!  Cut equipment and furniture costs!  Cut your practice down to its most basic and profitable niche!  Downshift!  Be happier!

Change is going to happen.  It can be good and to your favor, or bad and not in your favor.  The act of making it the former requires aggressive and decisive action before life (or change) is made for you.

So, here is to change.
