Cost of "Twelve Days of Christmas" Up 3.1% in 2007

By Michael Progar

ADVERTISEMENTS
Due to higher gold prices and increased compensation for minimum wage workers, the cost of the gifts described in the holiday classic "Twelve Days of Christmas" is up 3.1% for 2007, according to PNC Wealth Management's 23rd annual survey. The total cost for all 364 items will be $78,100, an increase of about 4% over last year.

The estimated price of five gold rings is $395, an increase of 21.5% over the 2006 price. However, that is still far below the all-time high of $750 back in 1989.

In addition, an increase in the minimum wage this year raised the eight Maids-a-Milking's wages by 13.6%, bringing their total cost per hour to $46.80. Scheduled increases in the minimum wage over the next two years will mean that a True Love will have to reach deeper into his pockets in the future, as well.

Although prices for turtle doves and partridges remained steady, the cost of six Geese-a-Laying is up 20%. Due to higher demand and increased shipping prices, Calling Birds (canaries) are also up 25% this year.
