Standards for NSSTA Board of Directors and New Leadership

By John Darer

ADVERTISEMENTS

The National Structured Settlement Trade Association (NSSTA) is currently seeking nominations for the 2010-2011 Board of Directors. Voting will take place at the NSSTA Annual Meeting at the Grand Hyatt in Washington, DC in early May 2010. Accompanying the request for nominations was this detail of the roles and responsibility of a board member (shown below).

Notably missing below is a requirement of adherence to the published NSSTA Code of Ethics. The NSSTA has a published Code of Ethics which it posts on its website.

Although fundamentally good people voluntarily serve its Board, given that (1) the structured settlement watchdog has unfortunately had to call out a number of current Board members concerning promotion of the NSSTA Certified Structured Settlement Consultant (CSSC) designation in a manner outside of NSSTA's own published guidelines and (2)  certain members have been nominated by Board members to leadership positions on association committees despite an apparent prior violation of the published Code of Ethics, this author opines that Board Members and those who they nominate for leadership positions need to uphold the highest standard, for the credibility to NSSTA membership and the public. What do YOU think?

Roles & Responsibilities

?    Attend and participate in quarterly Board meetings and monthly teleconferences when required

?    Act in accordance with the NSSTA Bylaws and all legal requirements associated with the Board

?    Set strategic direction and policy for NSSTA

?    Fulfill fiduciary responsibilities, including approving annual budget

?    Maintain a working knowledge of NSSTA Bylaws, budget, and operating policies

?    Review all materials in advance of meetings to allow for informed discussions and action during meetings

?    Provide constructive ideas, alternatives, and strategies for achieving results

?    Volunteer to serve in leadership positions and undertake special assignments willingly and enthusiastically

?    Always act in the best interest of NSSTA, not in one?s own company?s interest

?    Always present a positive public image of the association

?    Support the NSSTA staff
