: The GavelAL Still No. 1 for Spending on Court Races
By Peter Hardin
When nine candidates vied for three Alabama Supreme Court seats in 2010, they spent about $4.3 million, and Alabama retained its title as the most costly place to run for a state Supreme Court in the nation.
A Birmingham News article gave that assessment. It employed data compiled by the Justice at Stake Campaign, and it quoted JAS communications director Charles Hall for context and a national perspective.
“It appears this will be well short of a record year nationally, so Alabama is not unique,” Hall said.
All told, Alabama Supreme Court candidates have spent more than $44 million since the 2000 election cycle, the article reported — based on JAS data.
In 2010, only Republican Mike Bolin spent more than $1 million on his campaign, according to disclosure reports.
