: Legal Pad | LAThousands got fake subpoena from "O'Melevy & Myers"
By Jason Siegel
Nearly two thousand executive got a fake subpoena via e-mail last week, purporting to be a federal court subpoena issued by a Los Angeles firm, the New Jersey Law Journal reported.
The hoax was apparently an attempt at "phishing," where people are tricked into giving away financial information or have their computers infected by downloading a file. Posing as a fake law firm, O'Melevy and Myers, the sender provided the same physical address as L.A. firm O'Melveny & Myers.
People who downloaded the fake subpoena attachment got a password and financial information gathering virus. The data taken from infected computers was tracked to a server in Singapore, the New Jersey Law Journal reported.
