: Legal Pad | LASatriani may wait in vain for Coldplay's heads on a silver plate in court
By Richard Binder
A little over four months after guitarist Joe Satriani accused the Grammy-winning band Coldplay of copyright infringement, lawyers for the band denied any stealing of the alleged "substantial portions" of Satriani's song "If I Could Fly" to comprise its big hit "Viva La Vida."
The band's lawyers went on to say that the Satriani song "lacks originality" and therefore shouldn't receive copyright protection.
Satriani is seeking "any and all profits" from the song.
Howard E. King, Satriani's lawyer, said Coldplay's response was typical for copyright infringement cases and further suggested his client would like to see the matter settled out of court.
