: Legal Pad | LAACLU sues FBI challenging no-fly list
By Richard Binder
Corona resident Halime Sat joined nine plaintiffs in a case filed by the ACLU against head officials at the FBI. The suit challenges the U.S. government's no-fly list, calling it unconstitutional and a violation of the Immigration and Nationality Act and the Administrative Procedure Act.
A German citizen, Sat is Kurdish and born in Turkey. She lived in the U.S. for about two years before she was stopped in April from boarding a flight at Long Beach Airport to Oakland for a conference. An airport screener told Sat her name was flagged. Three hours later, two FBI agents arrived at the airport, re-confirmed that she was on the list but did not tell her why. They questioned her for about 25 minutes and she was not permitted to board the plane, but the agents allowed her to go home.
Sat said she flew domestically four months before the April incident without complications and has since canceled flights to Germany for a family reunion and to New York. Her American husband is an imam at a local mosque, but Sat doesn't believe that played a role in her name being on the list.
