WP Sentry 0.6 Released

By Pete

ADVERTISEMENTS

One of my pet projects, a private posting plugin for WordPress, has been accumulating minor fixes and major features for the last few months, and with the release of WordPress 2.7 imminent, I decided to go ahead and tie up the loose ends for a new release. There’s more on the new release below the fold.

If you have no idea what I’m talking about and you don’t blog using WordPress, now’s your chance to get out before I descend into pure nerdery. You’ve been warned.

First and foremost, it is worth noting that WP Sentry has been tested with the latest release candidate for WordPress 2.7. This means that, barring any oddities, it should work just fine when you upgrade to the shiny new version in a few days. For what it’s worth, version 0.5 worked as far as I could tell, too.

Another big deal: a user (thanks, Regis!) submitted a French-language localization for WP Sentry, so now those of you whose blogs are running in French should see the plugin speaking your language. The irony of announcing this in English is not lost on me, either. I’d be happy to include other language files with the plugin… just send them along!

Probably the coolest thing in 0.6 is private feeds. I took a copy of Feed Key and adapted it to log the user in when they submitted the key. So the way this works is that your users log in, go to their admin dashboard, and copy a unique feed URL into their feed reader. After that, they should start seeing private posts. Please note: Your Feed Key should be treated with the same seriousness as your password, though, because it is possible to log in to the blog with it. (Thanks to Jessee for the suggestion)

The multiple-select boxes got a little lovin’, too. I implemented ASM Select to make it a little easier to add and remove the groups. There had been numerous complaints that they were hard to use (they are), so this should help. (Thanks, Franz, for suggesting the change)

There were a bunch of minor fixes, too, but you can check those out on the WP Sentry plugin page.

I committed the changes today, so if you’re already using an old version of Sentry, you should get a notice to upgrade soon.

As usual, my comments are not a customer support line — if you have issues or questions with WP Sentry, please email me (address in the sidebar). Thanks!
