Talking About Things Ladies Don't Talk About

By "Daisy Duke"

ADVERTISEMENTS
My parents are two fabulous, albeit very conservative people. I was the kid who couldn't go to a party in high school unless the host's parents were home (and I had to prove it by having said parents call my parents upon my arrival....such a nerd) and my parents are generally of a conservative approach to most things in life. One of which being their children's relationships with members of the opposite sex.

(Brace yourselves) This March, I am going to become an Aunt, and seeing as how my brother isn't married this bundle of joy has been quite the mixed blessing so to speak. My parents were pretty upset/disappointed/what have it for quite some time. I'm happy to report that as of late they seem to have accepted it & realized they can't change the inevitable. So in March, I become Aunt Daisy. Woo.

I'm not sure if their acceptance of the above news, or their wisdom of the years has changed my parent's perspective on all things, but last night I had a conversation with my Dad that knocked my socks off. Specifically I had to pick my jaw up off the floor and reattach it. My parents have always been of the "you don't live together until you are married" way of life, which, for better or worse, is how they view things happening properly.

Last night Dad & I were on the phone and I mentioned something about how my lease is up in July, and when I move, I hope to have a bigger place. To which Papa Duke responded "That's right. You and BYSMOW, the two idiots who both pay rent on an apartment." I just kind of sat there, and my Dad laughed and continued, "I mean seriously? Wow. Talk about wasting money."

WTF? I am supposed to be his little girl. All innocent and sweet and nice, and he is supposed to be my mean, protective Dad, the one who told my high school boyfriend that he could kill people with his bare hands. (He can. But he needn't tell the poor kid that.) The Dad who has an F-16 gun barrel mounted on a piece of marble and has it hanging over his desk, surrounded by his various pictures of him flying a F'111's and F-16's with missiles on them, giving thumbs-ups out of the cockpit. The Dad who took high school boyfriend's into his office to "talk" and by "talk" I mean show them the huge gun barrel that usually sits mounted to a billion dollar fighter jet. The Dad who flew a foreign MIG fighter and has a huge plaque from some Eastern European country commemorating the event. The intimidating war hero who would never let anyone mess with his precious daughter.

And who told me that while my Mom doesn't agree, BISMOW and I should just move in together.

I'm still in shock.
