Law Students
: The Legal ScoopStudents Blogs & International Law
By Scott Felsenthal et al.
The Mississippi College School of Law International Law Society has its new blogup and running. After I heard about the launching of that law blog, I was reminded of my previous post on UC Hastings 3L, Travis Hodgkins. His Transnational Law blog landed him a job with the law offices of Harris & Moure, PLLC in Shanghai during the summer of 2007. Two observations can be gleaned from Travis' story. First, there are benefits which students may reap through law blogs. Second, establishing a background in international law has major advantages.
Student Blogs. Launching a student blog can be beneficial to you in a number of ways. First, such a website shows your interest in a particular area of law or the law in general. Second, "blawgs" demonstrate to potential employers that you are technologically savvy and reveals (for better or worse) your writing skills. Last, it can be a resume-builder!
International Law. Regardless of whether or not you decide to participate in a web log or initiate your own, the study of international law is becoming more and more quintessential to the legal literacy of law students. Globalizing society has led to the globalization of the practice of law. It is highly likely that at some point, in whatever area you practice, you will have clients who are confronted with international issues. A basis in international law may allow you to not only get clients, but also to keep them. Such knowledge and/or experience ultimately makes you a more well-rounded attorney, in addition to increasing your marketability.
Best wishes. JTH
