The Art of Asking Questions
The first month of law school is a precarious time. It is around this time that one’s reputation is formed. How do you ask genuine questions without being labeled as a “gunner”?
In law school, a “gunner” is usually someone who asks a rhetorical question for the sake of showing off his/her knowledge. One reason why “gunners” are not liked because they monopolize class time over trivial points for the sake of showing off.
The best way to avoid appearing like a gunner is to be well-prepared for class and ask a thoughtful question phrased simply. If you have a very complex question about a specific topic, you can always schedule an appointment with the professor or ask the professor before or after class.
