Last night's episode of How I Met Your Mother involved immi...wait for it...gration law. I missed the first 10 minutes at my panel so Dan had to fill me in before bed.
Dan: They brought up Robin marrying a U.S. citizen, and then Barney went down on one knee where she couldn't see, but then Marshall said, no, that wouldn't clear in time.
Me: What?! It doesn't have to! You just get the application in!
Dan: And she hadn't gotten the letter about renewing her work permit two months ago, so that's how she got in the situation.
Me: OK, that part is plausible.
Dan: Yeah.
Me: But come on! She's got to find a job in days and I'm supposed to believe the labor cert is going to clear but an I-130 wouldn't? (That's a family petition.)
Dan: You...give me a kiss. You know what they say on the show, right? Lawyered!
Me: Lawyered! (Pause.)
Me: And it doesn't even matter if she goes out of status because she's just a visa overstay and marrying a U.S. citizen cures that completely!
Dan: Mmm.
Me: I mean, disclaimer, not that I am suggesting Robin commit marriage fraud! But it could work!
Dan: (zzzz)
