: Legally Blonde AmbitionCole Haan, Ooh La Laa
By "Daisy Duke"
ADVERTISEMENTS
Harmless Error asked in the comment section if " have an opinion on the ridiculously overpriced Cole Haan "Nike Air" heels". And boy oh boy, do I ever. Cole Haan, which was founded in 1928 in Chicago, has become a wholly owned subsidiary of Nike, Inc. In fact, on Michigan Avenue, the Cole Haan store & Niketown are right next door to each other. Other than side by side stores, this meant that suddenly Cole Haan, maker of high end handbags & shoes (they do sell coats, belts, socks & luggage as well, but their bread and butter remains the staple leather goods) had all of the Nike technology at its fingertips. And so some fashion forward designers began putting Nike Air technology in mens loafers....women's ballet flats...men's wingtips...and, gloriously, women's heels. OH. MY. GOODNESS. THE GENIUS.
I own, at current count, two pairs of Cole Haan flats, one pair of boat shoes, one pair of pumps, one pair of strappy cocktail stilettos, and one pair of gloriously soft & luxurious knee high boots.
And? My feet don't hurt. In any of them.
The best part is that outside of some of the sportier flats, the air technology is hidden inside the shoe. Which means that this gorgeous pump (that is on sale!) that is even prettier in real life, and I know because I've tried them on no less than four times:
...is actually comfortable. You might notice that even on their stilettos, their heels are tiny bit thicker than the average shoe you'll find at Nordstroms or Zappos. This is because Cole Haan understands that it simply is not comfortable to hold all of your weight on a tiny half moon less than a square inch in size. They realize that heels become comfortable when they are crafted out of leather that forms to your feet, when the heels are thick enough to wear all day long, traipsing around cities & in and out of cabs and meetings and restaurant's, and when they include the gorgeous air bubble within, that at that point, you realize when you get home, hey, my feet. They don't hurt so badly. In fact...well...they feel fine. And then they had the audacity to start making flats like these, that make me want to scoop them up and carry them home and lovingly take care of them:
And then they realized it wasn't just women at work that want comfortable heels, that well, we'd like to feel our toes at cocktail parties and wedding receptions and out on dates...So gorgeous styles like these started cropping up:
And yes, the price point is a bit steep, the heels run from about $275 to $350 a pair. However, I have discovered that they last forever. They fit me. And? Cole Haan has sales, that are often pretty good. They are also sold at a variety of nice department stores, that often run their own internal sales or give you discounts or points with a store credit card, and suddenly when you do the math you realize that a pair of these heels, that are comfortable and are going to last you more than one season are so much more economical than three pairs of $80 Steve Madden heels that hurt your feet and might or might not last through the winter.

And besides, Steve Madden never made a penny loafer look this good:
And I'm sorry but these pumps, whether they are in a courtroom, a parent teacher conference, or simply a nice dinner out ooze sophistication & class:

I buy shoes less often, and I have to really commit when I pick a pair, because it takes me a while to save up and I can't just change my mind and run out and grab another pair in a few weeks if I change my mind. However, their styles are so classic and so well made I find myself simply deciding between colors & open toe v. closed toe, and coming home incredibly happy every time.
Finally, I also recommend, for those individuals who have a hard time keeping their feet happy in heels to liberally apply Body Glide to their toots before putting your shoes on and sprinkling a tiny bit of baby powder in your shoes at the end of every day. Also, after you first buy a new pair of heels, a few hours of television watching with the shoes AND a pair of socks on will help them mold to your feet faster. And finally, never buy shoes at the end of the day when your feet are swollen & tired. Noon is the best time to get the most accurate fit.
