COURTS: Lexington Public Defender Quitting Over Pay Cuts

By Michael Stevens

ADVERTISEMENTS

Justice is not served when those whom we pay to defend and not paid well!

This story on pay cuts to a public defender is not a good sign of the times, nor the tomorrows:

The director of Lexington's public defender office will retire June 1, the Department of Public Advocacy said Tuesday.

Rebecca Ballard DiLoreto became acting director of the office Aug. 1 and then director in January. She previously had overseen DPA's post-trial division and has been a public defender since 1984.

DiLoreto said she had taken a significant pay cut to work in Lexington. She had assumed her pension would be calculated based on her three highest salaries, but she learned two weeks ago that her new position would reduce her pension. DiLoreto said her pension would have been reduced for each month she continued working.

"It is devastating to me in terms of what I wanted to get done here," she said.
