California Ban May Reach US Supreme Court

By Chris Bennett, Tudor Carsten, Michael R. Coburn, Sarah Dale-Harris, Pablo Guzman, Danielle (Dani) Lemon, Chris Metcalfe and David Spratley

ADVERTISEMENTS
California legislation prohibiting the sale of violent video games to minors may still have its day in the US Supreme Court. California legislators are hoping the big court will hear oral arguments in their appeal of the decision to strike down the legislation, upheld by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeal this year. Supreme Courts justices met on Tuesday to decide whether to put the case on the docket.<p> <p> The law, which was signed by Governor Schwarzenegger in 2005, was bounced by the lower courts for violating First Amendment rights. The law would ban the sale of violent games to anyone under 18 and require manufacturers to label the games with an "18" sticker.<p> <p> An order list issued September 30, 2009 did not include a decision on the application. A decision may be made public early next week.<p> <p> Coverage from CNBC here.<p>Bookmarks: <a href="http://del.icio.us/login/?url=http://www.davis.ca/en/blog/Video-Game-Law/2009/10/01/California-Ban-May-Reach-US-Supreme-Court&title=California+Ban+May+Reach+US+Supreme+Court" >Delicious</a>, <a href="http://digg.com/tools/digthis.php?u=http://www.davis.ca/en/blog/Video-Game-Law/2009/10/01/California-Ban-May-Reach-US-Supreme-Court" >Digg </a>, <a href="http://www.facebook.com/sharer.php?u=http://www.davis.ca/en/blog/Video-Game-Law/2009/10/01/California-Ban-May-Reach-US-Supreme-Court">Facebook</a>, <a href="http://www.google.com/bookmarks/mark?op=add&bkmk=http://www.davis.ca/en/blog/Video-Game-Law/2009/10/01/California-Ban-May-Reach-US-Supreme-Court&title=California+Ban+May+Reach+US+Supreme+Court" >Google</a>, <a href="http://reddit.com/submit?url=http://www.davis.ca/en/blog/Video-Game-Law/2009/10/01/California-Ban-May-Reach-US-Supreme-Court&title=California+Ban+May+Reach+US+Supreme+Court">Reddit</a>, <a href="http://www.stumbleupon.com/submit?url=http://www.davis.ca/en/blog/Video-Game-Law/2009/10/01/California-Ban-May-Reach-US-Supreme-Court&title=California+Ban+May+Reach+US+Supreme+Court">StumbleUpon</a>, <a href="http://myweb2.search.yahoo.com/myresults/bookmarklet?u=http://www.davis.ca/en/blog/Video-Game-Law/2009/10/01/California-Ban-May-Reach-US-Supreme-Court&=California+Ban+May+Reach+US+Supreme+Court" >Yahoo</a>
