In there article » Funambol challenges iPhone lock with open source app | Open Source | ZDNet.com the others point out: “But until Apple stops locking-out third party applications in its software updates, it?s hard to see users? problems going away, or open source gaining a significant foothold.” I find this a telling example of how Apple is trying to avoid making the same mistakes as Microsoft with respect maintaining a monopoly over its operating system. Unlike Microsoft, who did not tie its operating system to any particular hardware, Apple has always stuck to its proprietary approach. In the 90s - not opening up seemed to spell real trouble for Apple. But now we see a change of fortune as Microsoft is struggling mightily with the open source community like a dinosaur in a tar pit - while Apple enjoys the benefits of dominating the hottest consumer products with its own operating system. Tying the OS to the hardware has helped Apple get to where it is today - so they are going to make sure they don’t have to compete with the always innovating, hypercompetitive entrepreneurs out there in cyberworld.
