: Food Safety NewsNo Inspections Prompts Two Recall Actions
By Dan Flynn and Suzanna Schreck
Two meat and poultry recalls occurred over the weekend for products that did not get proper inspections. The companies involved were based in New York and Nevada.
The most recent involved the Sparks, NV-based CaiE Foods Limited, which recalled approximately 12,382 pounds of assorted Asian-style meat and poultry products, including steamed buns and oriental-style dumplings.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) said the products were recalled because they were produced without the benefit of federal inspection.
The following products are subject to recall:
Various size boxes of "CaiE Foods, ORIENTAL STYLE DUMPLING, and Chicken with Vegetable, KEEP FROZEN." Boxes may bear the establishment number "P-40079" inside the USDA mark of inspection.
Various size boxes of "CaiE Foods, ORIENTAL STYLE DUMPLING, Pork with Vegetable, KEEP FROZEN," which may also be labeled "POTSTICKER, Pork with Vegetable Dumpling, Pre-Steamed, KEEP FROZEN." Boxes may bear the establishment number "EST. 40079" inside the USDA mark of inspection.
8.8-pound boxes of "CaiE Foods, ORIENTAL STYLE STEAMED BUN, Filled with Pork and BBQ Sauce, KEEP FROZEN." Boxes may bear the establishment number "EST. 40079" inside the USDA mark of inspection.
15-pound boxes of "CaiE Foods, Siu Mai Dumpling, Chicken, Pre-Steamed, KEEP FROZEN." Boxes may bear the establishment number "P-40079" inside the USDA mark of inspection.
15-pound boxes of "CaiE Foods, Siu Mai Dumpling, Pork with Shrimp, Pre-Steamed, KEEP FROZEN." Boxes may bear the establishment number "EST. 40079" inside the USDA mark of inspection.
The assorted Asian-style products were produced from Nov. 2009 through Feb. 26, 2010, and were distributed to casino restaurants and distribution centers in Nevada. FSIS has not yet released a list of retail outlets involved in the recall.
The agency said the problem was discovered by FSIS and is part of an ongoing investigation. FSIS has received no reports of illness due to consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about an illness should contact a physician.
FSIS routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to verify recalling firms notify their customers of the recall and that steps are taken to make certain that the product is no longer available to consumers.
Consumer and media questions regarding the recall should be directed to the company Owner CaiE George at (775) 356-8838.
The other recall for no inspections came at Brooklyn-based NY Gourmet Salads Inc, for an undetermined amount of various chicken products.
Those products included:
5-pound tubs of "CHICKEN SALAD, MADE WITH ALL WHITE MEAT."
5-pound tubs of "GRILLED CHICKEN PASTA & BROCCOLI."
3-pound trays with six wraps of "CHICKEN w/ROASTED PEPPER & MOZZARELLA WRAP."
5-pound trays of "GRILLED BONELESS CHICKEN BREAST CUTLET."
5-pound trays of "TERIYAKI CHICKEN BREAST."
The chicken products were produced intermittently between November 5, 2009, and March 10, 2010, and were distributed to retail establishments in the New York City metropolitan area. Each chicken product bears the establishment number "P-34440" inside the USDA mark of inspection.
