: The Yin BlogQuick election thoughts
By Tung Yin
Just some quick thoughts about last night's election returns. . . .
1. I felt kind of bad for Senator Russ Feingold (D-Wis.), who I've admired from a distance for a while now. I didn't always agree with his positions, but I really respected him for sticking to his principles. Unlike his colleagues, who came to criticize the USA Patriot Act when convenient, he actually voted against it. As one of my colleagues put it, "He was the best person who lost last night."
2. I watched MSNBC's coverage of the returns, and it was pretty hilarious. As in, hilariously deluded. At one point, the commentators were saying that the Republicans hadn't done that well, all things considered, because they should have been winning more.
3. The country will be better off if the Republican Party heeds Marco Rubio's observation that it would be "a grave mistake if we believe that tonight these results are somehow an embrace of the Republican Party."
4. Voting by mail, as we do here in Oregon, is civilized and convenient, but it sure does make close races that much more anxious in terms of awaiting results.
