Posted on March 31, 2010
Good. Members of Congress who think Latino voters aren't paying attention and they can vote anti-immigrant to keep Tea Party activists happy may want to rethink that strategy. In related news. GRAHAM: IMMIGRATION REFORM DEAD IN THE SENATE

Posted on March 28, 2010
Lindsay Graham has repeated his observation that the health care vote has poisoned the well in the Senate and not to expect any action on the issue this year. According to The Hill: Graham, who's sought to work with some Democrats on the controversial issues, said that healthcare efforts had 'poisoned the well' for bipartisan cooperation going forward...

ON THE HILL

Posted on March 25, 2010
I may be a little light in posting today and tomorrow because I'm in Washington to walk the halls of Congress to talk about the need for immigration legislation.I'll be joined by more than 250 other members of the American Immigration Lawyers Association here to explain to members of Congress what families and employers are experiencing in the field...

WILL USCIS SABOTAGE THE NEW HEALTH CARE BILL?

Posted on March 22, 2010
This evening Congress passed historic legislation extending health coverage to more than 30 million more Americans. That?s the equivalent of adding the population of the entire country of Canada to the insurance rolls. This is going to be a monumental challenge for many reasons one of which is the fact that the country already has a severe physician shortage...

Posted on March 22, 2010
Last week Lindsay Graham indicated that if Democrats passed health care reform using reconciliation, that would spell the end of immigration reform. Now he is reversing that position. Graham was interviewed on Univision that he is still on board.

THE NEXT EINSTEIN

Posted on March 22, 2010
NY Times columnist Tom Friedman has another great article reminding Americans why immigration is in our self-interest. In his latest piece he talks about how most of the finalists for the Intel science prize for high school kids (the most prestigious honor a young American science student can seek) are immigrants or children of immigrants...

200,000 MARCH FOR COMPREHENSIVE IMMIGRATION REFORM

Posted on March 22, 2010
Most of the media was understandably focused on health care reform after yesterday's historic vote in Congress, but the immigration debate was literally right around the corner. An estimated 200,000 marchers filled five long blocks of the Washington Mall yesterday to urge the President and members of Congress to now pivot from health care reform to immigration...

THE MEHTA-ENDELMAN PLAN

Posted on March 20, 2010
A few of you have written to me telling me about an interesting set of ideas proposed by my friends Gary Endelman and Cyrus Mehta, both fellow immigration lawyers. I've praised the plan in the comments, but it is worth bumping up to its own post. The proposal has three major components: 1...

WILL ANTIS SEND THE NEXT BIG THING TO ASIA?

Posted on March 20, 2010
A kind reader sent me a link to a new Business Week article that discusses a fast emerging trend in American business schools - taking jobs in Asia rather than in the US. One of the biggest targets - young Asian immigrant students in the US being lured back home: How much longer can the Asian allure hold? With protectionist talk rising in America, and China trying to put the brakes on its rapidly growing economy, there's always a chance that Asia could stumble...

$285 BILLION

Posted on March 20, 2010
The Center for American Progress has published a new report showing that this is what it would cost to rid the country of the estimated 10,000,000 illegally present immigrants in the US.

POLL: IMMIGRATION CRUCIAL ISSUE TO MOST HISPANIC VOTERS

Posted on March 20, 2010
Those who follow immigration politics closely know that the finding in a new America's Voice Bendixen poll of 1,100 Hispanic voters that more than 3/4 consider immigration to be a major issue for them is true. But for many anti-immigrant members of Congress, there's a case of wishful thinking going on - that Hispanic voters only consider immigration a minor issue and will vote on other issues instead...

We still don't have the official summary of the Senate comprehensive immigration reform bill, but Senator Charles Schumer, the chair of the Senate Immigration Subcommittee and Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) have written a joint op-ed piece that will appear in tomorrow morning's Washington Post that describes the major provisions of the CIR bill they will shortly introduce in the Senate...

SPAT BETWEEN AFL-CIO AND US CHAMBER REGARDING CIR GOES PUBLIC

Posted on March 16, 2010
As if CIR isn't on shaky enough ground as is. The AFL-CIO is pushing a protectionist agenda that will mean no future guest worker program when unemployment rates return to normal. And their plan would put existing non-immigrant visa programs in jeopardy...

GRAHAM: PASS HEALTH CARE AND WE'LL KILL IMMIGRATION REFORM

Posted on March 11, 2010
I've been impressed by Senator Graham's willingness to help move forward immigration reform, but this is really pathetic. Graham reported on his meeting today with President Obama and Senator Schumer. Most of it sounds good until you get to this lovely part:I expressed, in no uncertain terms, my belief that immigration reform could come to a halt for the year if health care reconciliation goes forward...

NATIONAL ID CARD PROPOSAL BECOMES IMMIGRATION REFORM LIGHTNING ROD

Posted on March 10, 2010
Readers have already been discussing this subject in the comments. The usual positions on immigration won't necessarily define how people feel about a proposal to issue a national identification card to all authorized to work in the US. On the one hand, the immigration "law and order" types love the idea of a fool proof way go guarantee that all workers are legal...
