Kucinich Sues House Cafeteria for Olive Pit Injury

By Dan Flynn and Suzanna Schreck

ADVERTISEMENTS
Former presidential candidate and U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio, is suing the U.S. House of Representatives cafeteria for selling him a sandwich wrap in 2008 containing an olive pit that allegedly caused oral injuries.

The lawsuit, filed in Superior Court for the District of Columbia earlier this month, seeks $150,000 in damages from the companies that operate the House cafeteria for selling food that was "unfit for human consumption" that Kucinich claims caused "significant pain, suffering and loss of enjoyment."

Kucinich claims that biting into the olive pit caused "permanent debate and oral injuries requiring multiple surgical and dental procedures."

"Said sandwich wrap was unwholesome and unfit for human consumption in that it was presented to contain pitted olives, yet unknown to plaintiff, contained an unpitted olive or olives which plaintiff did not reasonably expect to be in the food prepared for him, and could not visually detect prior to consumption," reads the complaint. "

Kucinich's office is not commenting on the issue, noting that it's a private matter, but has confirmed that the congressman did file the lawsuit.
