Patent Law

Valspar is seeking a Patent Attorney to work in its Minneapolis, Minnesota, offices.

Essential Functions:
? Patent drafting and prosecution.
? Counseling across several divisions in regards to patent and trade secret matters.
? Responsible for developing and implementing IP strategy within one or more business areas.
? Act as the primary contact for IP issues within one or more business areas.
? Prepare, file and prosecute patent applications worldwide to protect the company?s investment in research and development.
? Prepare written opinions on issues of patentability, patent infringement, patent validity and freedom-to-operate in order to minimize the business risk associated with bringing new discoveries and innovations to the marketplace.
? Assist product development teams in designing products to avoid the valid patent claims of third parties in order to minimize the business risk associated with bringing new discoveries and innovations to the marketplace.
? Provide general counseling on IP issues to the relevant business area(s) including function groups such as business management, marketing, research and development and manufacturing.

Requirements:
? BA or BS Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Material Science or Polymer Science. Doctor of Jurisprudence and licensed to practice law in one or more of the 50 states. Licensed to practice before the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
? 3+ years experience in IP practice, including patent preparation and prosecution, opinion work, licensing, client counseling, chemical patent drafting and prosecution.
? Less than 10% travel required.
? Excellent legal, analytical, writing and computer skills.
? Organized, creative, detail oriented, capable of working under pressure and on multiple tasks, and must be able to timely meet deadlines.
? Enthusiastic with ability to engender client trust and confidence.
? Ability to take a reasoned position and defend it in the face of opposition.
? Works well as a team.
