By Jason Siegel
Los Angeles attorney Pierre-Richard Prosper was elected to the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
He was already on the committee prior to his election. U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice appointed him as an interim member.
Prosper, who is counsel at Arent Fox's Los Angeles office, is one of 18 international experts on the committee and the only American.
Prosper is a former Bush appointee, previously U.S. Ambassador-at-Large for War Crimes Issues from 2001 to 2005. According to his U.S. State Department online biography, he played a key role in the Bush Administration's "War on Terror", was the chief negotiator and lead diplomat for the United States in engaging nations regarding their nationals captured in combat and was responsible for policy on Iraqi war crimes.
