Sen. Feinstein investigates closure of L.A.'s public corruption unit

Dianne_feinstein U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) is investigating the recent disbanding of the public corruption unit at the U.S. Attorney's Office in Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Feinstein called on Atty. Gen. Michael Mukasey to provide the Justice Department's rational for axing the high-profile unit and information on any possible role the DOJ and White House had in the decision. She also asked whether lawyers in the unit had any input in the decision making process and how pending public corruption cases would be handled.

Thomas_obrien U.S. Atty. Thomas P. O'Brien claims the unit was disbanded so more lawyers could file public corruption cases.

The Los Angeles Times reports that some lawyers from the unit, who requested anonymity, claim it was eliminated after O'Brien yelled at prosecutors not working enough, filing too few cases, and insulting him behind his back.
