: Practical ParalegalismParalegal Wins Texas State Bar Pro Bono Award
By Lynne DeVenny
Lyla Malolepszy wears many hats as a legal professional. According to her LinkedIn profile, she's a paralegal for the Law Office of Donald Johnston in Sherman, Texas, as well as the Executive Coordinator for the Grayson County Bar Association.Yet she still finds time to log many hours a year as a volunteer paralegal for Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas, a service commitment she's made since 2003 when she was pursuing her associate degree in paralegal studies. The State Bar of Texas Paralegal Division recognized her dedication with this year's Exceptional Pro Bono Award.
Malolepszy told the Sherman Denison Herald Democrat that she was honored to accept the award.
"I accepted this award with deep appreciation towards those that felt that I deserved it. I appreciate the recognition and will always remember this unexpected credit," she said.
Her volunteer duties with LANWT include screening applicants for legal aid assistance and assisting in handling pro bono cases accepted by the non-profit organization. She also recruits and trains new volunteers.
I'm glad that the Texas State Bar Paralegal Division recognized Malolepszy for her long history of community service. A recipient of the LANWT's 2004-2005 Grayson County Paralegal of the Year Award and the North Texas Legal Association's 2007-2008 Paralegal of the Year Award, it's clear that she wears all those hats well.
