Indian Residential School Settlement Money

By jarvis666

ADVERTISEMENTS
On my reserve, the firsts of the Indian Residential School settlement money is starting to come in for many of the survivors. While I think the amount that they are receiving does not make up for a robbed childhood, lost language, and an attack on a people, what I said back in my May 2006 blog still stands true for me. Many survivors seem happy that they have received something after all these decades, and for that, I happy for them that they may feel some sense of relief. I wish they all could have gotten so much more (or better yet, have their childhood restored to them), but maybe perhaps a partial victory is better than no victory. But alas; the holidays are here, and it?s nice that they got something to enjoy themselves with. Thirty-thousand dollars may not be much to a lawyer, but to someone in poverty, it?s like a million dollars.

Many survivors may not have much time left on this Earth, but I am happy that they got at least something, but I still can?t help but think about those that did not live long enough to see their settlement, or those that did not even survive the schools at all. Please don?t forget them!
