: Legal Pad | LASalas gets probation, community service for faking her own kidnapping
By Richard Binder
Nancy Salas, a 23-year-old resident of Glendale, disappeared on May 12 after telling family members she was going for a run. She did not reappear until the following day at Carpet One in Merced, when she claimed to have been kidnapped and sexually assaulted by a man with a knife.
Subsequent inquiries by detectives revealed this story to be a hoax, perpetrated by Salas out of fear of the repercussions of lying to her friends and family about dropping out of UCLA. The university's records showed Salas hadn't been enrolled at the school since fall 2008.
This past Friday Salas pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge of providing a false report to police. Merced County Superior Court Judge Glenn Ritchey sentenced her to unsupervised probation and community service, as well as paying $878 to the Glendale Police Department for the rape and medical exam performed after she claimed she was sexually assaulted.
